Crap! My old stomping ground.

I can't think of anywhere I've ever felt less threatened, on or off the road, than riding in the Ardeche but it just goes to show that you can stumble upon a psycho anywhere!

This happened on a local hill, Brown Clee Shropshire, that I’ve walked, cycled and camped on

Whilst incidents like these are truly tragic, I do think they need to be put into context and viewed against the number of people walking, cycling etc who haven't been killed.
May the bridges you burn light your way

Christ

Stu's absolutely right of course, but it does unfortunately give some truth to that common fear of the psycho killer lurking in the woods that so many people have, usually dispelled after a couple of nights sleeping in the woods with absolutely no homicide.

Or the number of cyclists/hikers who have been killed not hiking or biking.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

Wonder if there's a gap in the market for a bikepacking murder mystery weekend? Clues could be strung up in pub beer gardens, left in the reduced items fridge in Spar, shouted by an angry farmer etc.

True but we could say that about women walking alone
I have to say it's new to me folk get attacked in this way and sometime the internet ( constant updates about cycling deaths for example) is not that helpful ( even though it's not untrue)

It's about context - far more people die in accidents and stuff than in these situations - it is because it is unusual that it gets reported. The "usual" deaths often don't warrant news time......

Shocking, however I'd take my chances in the countryside any day over wandering about in a city or other heavily populated area given the choice. I'm pretty sure that statistics would back me up in feeling safer in the great outdoors as well.
