Walking pole extension for shelter.

Post by Richpips »

I've got some 125cm black diamond walking poles - https://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/e ... ing-poles/

I am wanting to use one as a pole for a Hexpeak, so could do with a ~20+cm extension. Any ideas?

Not quite the answer to your question, but Lomo do an extending bivi pole for about £12, that's what I use with a walking pole tent

Would it be naive to think a short section of tube with a suitable ID to accept the tip of the pole would do the trick?

Pole jacks have been around for a while. Just a case of finding a tube with the right ID for your pole.

I had a Zpacks pole extender, which broke on first use despite being reinforced with Gorilla tape. I ended up buying one of the long Alpkit poles, which has been brilliant.

Cheers, Michael.

Another cheaper, lighter option, if you're using two poles anyway, just strap them together

I used to do that for my Supermid, paracord with loops in each end for the pole tips, then velcro straps to keep them together. Survived some pretty windy conditions fine

I made it as an experiment and it worked so well I just kept it like that

What's the diameter of the narrowest sections of your poles? You just need to find something the same size and cut it to length

I've used old broken poles or bought gucci carbon rod and made my own

Thanks for everyone's input. I have found a solution.

Alpkit Hathersage have a bin full of spare pole bits upstairs so I grabbed a section that would go over the tip end of the pole.

The pole end being tapered, the carbon tube wobbled. So I wrapped it in cling film then coated the cling film liberally in epoxy before pushing the carbon tub tight on the pole end.

10 minutes was then spent sweating while the epoxy went off sufficiently to see if I could take the extension off again.

:-bd :-bd :-bd :-bd :-bd

At the other end of the salvaged pole is a threaded section with a red "nut". I have glued this into a bottle lid so that when screwed into the end of the pole it will play nicely with the fabric of the shelter.

Max pole length now 145 cm.

Was gonna say that I've got one of those linking things that Lune Ranger linked above and it works great if you're using two poles but that solution is very neat Rich. :-bd
