Talk to me about Velocity P35 rims.

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

Looking to build a new front wheel for my 'guiding' bike. The ability to run a BIG tyre will be a real bonus and the P35 rim looks like it could be the way forward. Anyone got any experience and also any idea if there's any 29" ones in stock in the UK ? ... JRA haven't got any at the moment.

I couldn't find any UK stock when I was looking a while back so ended up using Nimbus Dominators in 42mm. Builds a nice bombproof wheelset as long as you don't mind the weight, and I don't.

Run them front and rear on my ss Karate Monkey and love the extra cushion. You can get them from these guys.

I've seen the Nimbus rims, the (nearly) 1kg per rim puts me off a touch but they are less than half the price I can get a P35 for, so I won't dismiss them just yet ;)

Nick at UDC said that the KH 47mm " 29" Freeride rim should be back in stock within the next two months" ....on the 14th March so that should be about now. I'm running out of cash so the Nimbus dominators are looking ever more appealing.

I don't think P35s are good vfm, the finish quality isn't that durable (my bike does get a fair amount of use tho) and they can be dinged relatively easily if you pinch the tyre, but what they do to tyre profile and pressures you can get away with makes them well worth it. I like them overall but would go for something else if only other rim makers got away from this daft low-weight is everything idea. 35mm and 600g is a sweet spot for general use imo. I have 2 sets of wheels on P35 both with 1000s of miles on and aside from some flaky paint patches and pulling out a couple of minor dents they're fine. Work really well tubeless too.

I have just taken the plunge and bought a set of rabbit holes to go on my jones  cant wait big bucks but 50mm at 699g knard up front and something chunky out back.
should be cool

P.S then i'll have a set of wheels for the new Jones long ranger.

How BIG a tyre do you want? Saw a Surly Rabbit Rim on Charlie's website (think it was 50mm)
That would take a Knard 3" wide tyre, and will fit onto some 29er rigid forks, it does look tight though

A Knard would be on the cards at some point ... I believe that they only come up about 3mm narrower when they're mounted on a P35 than they do on a Rabbit Hole.

Can't justify the expense of a Rabbit Hole.

the new Jones long ranger.
Would love to see one of those up close.

Singular Sam had a P35/Knard front combo on a Gryphon at the Spin show the other week, he said it works well enough. I'm tempted to try the tyre anyway and go for a rim / front wheel later.

Aye the long ranger could well be the perfect big distance bike for me, my jones is great in the tech stuff when loaded, but 29+ and a longer wheel base, combined with the rearward weight bias would make a super comfy ride. (I hope)

Have tested a krampus lots and keeping coming back to my JOnes, the Krampus is just too nose heavy, Jeff has broken me!

Guided some rides at the weekend for the LBS and their santa cruz demo day, I was given the run of the bikes on demo but went out on my JOnes!

There is some thing about the Long Ranger that just makes you want to smile. http://www.jonesbikes.com/components/co ... 0_blog.jpg It just looks so right.
Until I can afford a Jones it looks like chances of getting a 29 plus front wheel are getting slimmer. UDC just emailed about KH 29 Freeride ".... After talking with our supplier in Germany it looks like they are not going to have any more for another 5-6 months unfortunately."
So that means the choices are Velocity P35 (35mm narrow, 535g,£66, fragile?), Rabbit hole ( 50mm!, 699g, £140, out of stock at Ison until end July), KH29 XC (39mm, 36h, 830g, £39) or the Nimbus Dominator 2 (42mm, 36h, 903g eek! but only 39.50). I guess it's going to have to be the Nimbus, I guess if it's too heavy I could diy some rabit holes in it with a drill.

Is he willing to split them? I just need (can afford) the front wheel. I'm assuming they are the 47mm freeride? I thought the price was a little steep for second hand last time it was mentioned. I'm so tight with money! Maybe someone else on here would be interested in the other one. PM me with the details if it's available.

Latest from Roger (the Boss) at UDC about KH Freeride ..."I think it is actually only going to be 1 month. I have just had another talk with them and they now believe that they will be arriving on their next container. We have ordered quite a few to be sure that we don't run out this time." Velocity P35 (35mm narrow, 535g,£66, fragile?)
When I say dinged relatively easily, to be fair that's usually from a mis-timed hop/jump over rooty sections with about 18psi in a 2.4 Ardent, I'm 11.5-12st and not especially smooth. If I'm riding loaded or anywhere rocky I add PSI. They seem to have a rep for dings but whether they really are soft or it's a result of low pressures, big tyres + resulting enthusiastic riding I'm not so sure.

Maybe that's the advantage of buying a unicycle rim, they are designed for hopping, low pressure and massive abuse but the down side is a bit more weight and 36h. When matched with a knard that demands a really wide rim then maybe it's a magic combination, particularly for bikepacking or have I just been suckered by the hype? The p35 is more like 600g by the way, the weight I quoted was for the 26 from their website. Woops.
