Any frameprotection tape recommendations?

Post by robsmuddygloves »

Not the sexiest topic discussion, but any recommendations would be great. I’m fitting my acepac handlebar harness and want to tape up to prevent rub. Which does sound a little suggestive. Cheers.

I've used a combo of 3M helitape, inner tube and duct tape

Bog standard vinyl wrap film is good enough to prevent bag strap rub.
Helitape for cable rub and on the cranks

Yep, 3m helitape is the best I've used but clear Gorilla tape works as a get by.

I've found the Gorilla clear tape to be really durable. But be warned its a bloody nightmare to remove if/when you want to renew it. Comes off in little bits and leaves all the adhesive behind. That requires lots of meths and T-cut to remove. Might go better with a hair dryer but I don't have one. ( 30 years of No.1 all over  )

What I can do is suggest what not to buy. ETC frame is too stiff and only works on perfect round tubes. Fine if you're doing a trad steel frame but anything in swoopy carbon or hydroformed and tapered and it's hopeless. Sticks OK initially and then peels itself off over night.*

*yes, I used a hairdryer, did it on a warm day, cleaned the frame with alcohol wipes, etc.
