Somewhere between 8 and 22.

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

Some time ago, Ben asked if I could make a stove bigger than an 8g but not as big as a 22g. His thinking was / is that it would provide some additional capacity for longer burn times and also help increase stability. Well, here it is or at least the first incarnation of his idea.

Both capacity and stability have increased over the 8g for a weight penalty of around 4g. I've kept the jetting on the conservative side so that (a) it still functions well with a 400ml / 450ml mug and (b) remains fuel efficient so as not to squander the additional fuel.

Anyway, I'm thinking it could be a goer, so if anyone thinks they might like one, say yay (I'll not hold you to it) and I'll see about making a batch up.

Nice one, Stu. That looks ace, I'm obviously a yes please!

I'd like another conical windshield too please to pair this up with a Snow Peak 450 mug. I don't know how old mine is now but the bottom, where it sits on the floor near the holes, has completely disappeared (corroded? eroded? given up? dissolved? no idea!). It's still functional but it's really looking very worse for wear

I'm stuck between "sounds ideal, but can I justify it when I already have the 8g version?" and "one can never have too many stoves".
I'm similarly torn by the copper-coloured mug (though am cautious of burnt lips, having previously been scalded by an aluminium mug).

The stability thing is definitely an attraction but I'm still using the "other" Stu stove which is an improvement over the 8g in this regards anyway.

Now, if it was made of Titanium, I wouldn't be able to help myself

Out of interest*, I decided to make one with an internal wick and another with the same jetting configuration as an 8g.

With wick - decreased bloom time by around 30 seconds / increased total burn time by 26 seconds / added 2g in weight but 12ml of meths was unable to bring a mug of water to a rolling boil.

With 8g jetting - no change in bloom time / decreased total burn time by 10 seconds / decreased boil time by only a few seconds.

We probably got it right first time. I'll make a proper start on those today.

First batch done. Anyone still wanting one - if you can send £20 as a F&F payment to stuart@bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk and tell me where to send it, I'll pop one int' post. I've not printed any instructions for them but I'm reckoning all those who showed interest, know what they're doing

Fancy one of these. However I've never used a meths burner before so I'm a complete newbie.
I'd need instructions on everything!

Brief run-down ...

1/ stand stove on level non-flammable surface.
2/ Pour some meths into the centre chamber - how much will depend what you're hoping to do but for boiling a mug full, start with 15ml(ish).
3/ Light meths and wait.
4/ How long you wait will depend on conditions. Might be 30s or 1m30s but sooner or later the meths will begin to vapourise and flames will appear from the jets.
5/ Once all the jets are burning, simply place your mug directly (carefully) on top of the stove.

As with all stoves but especially meths, the use of a windshield will make a massive difference to boil times.
