Lube - not for chain

Post by maxap »

Hello all,
What kind of lube are people using for dérailleurs when out on a trip. Do you use your chain lube? I've just come back from a 6 day trip and I had a fair amount of trouble with the rear dérailleur due to water, dust, mud, loads of high grass etc. I'd brought a small bottle of oil but it somehow leaked out before I could use it! At home I give them a squirt with some graphite lube I bought for my wood burner. Works really well but its a big can so can't use it on the road.
Any recommendations?

I don't ever think I've lubed a derailleur outside of when I've serviced a mech in 20+ years.

Phew!

(I do give them a liberal squirt of WD40 in Winter but that's aimed at stopping them freezing up).

Never lubed and not sure what you are lubing.
Does lubing attract dirt and make them stickier and perform worse ?
