Gas Stoves (Upgrade from Alpkit Kraku)

Post by Richard G »

So, in the hopes of trying to get to the point where I don't actively hate the camping aspects of bikepacking I'm trying to make a few upgrades to my kit list for more sedate events (WRT etc).

My Alpkit Kraku is fine, but there are some aspects to it that I don't like. With that said, does anyone have any opinions on these?

MSR Pocket Rocket 2
Optimus Crux
Snowpeak GigaPower Stove 2.0
Soto Windmaster

I'm not going to lose any sleep over the weight of any of them, what I want is a fast boil with good wind resistance and fairly easy to store (I like the idea of how the Crux fits under a gas cartridge).

I use a Crux.
I used to have a Pocket Rocket.

Not sure there is any difference in performance. Wind performance is obviously going to improve with a windshield. I'm currently using one of Stus magnetic jobs.

The storage mechanism of the Crux is, indeed, useful.

What are those? I can't see anything on the shop that's magnetic.

I have a pocket rocket version 1 I think Rich. Its very good and I think they changed the way it packs up for the v2 so more compatible. Never let me down. I try to use the jetboil gas for winter as that's what a local outdoor shop explained is better for calorific value...

I have the cheaper Soto amicus rather than the windmaster.

It's very good

Actually looking at it that might be what I have, it’s very good and wind proof however :-bd

Sounds like the Windmaster might be a no brainer then. Cheers all.

Been using the Soto Windmaster for a year and it's brilliant. No experience with other similar ones, though.

There a trick to packing it? Or are you all just cramming the pot supports in vertically with it and hoping there wont be any damage?

I store it inside a 300ml Tuperware type box ( with the pot support removed) along with a back-up lighter , Swiss army Knife and half a pot-scrubber, hot lips and head lamp.

Once removed you can 'clip' the supports round the neck of the stove. Doesn't take up much room and keeps them out of harms way.
