Scottish gas canister logistics

Post by Dave Barter »

I have a backpacking trip planned which takes me into the proper wilderness of Scotland. Due to work and other factors I'll need to get a plane to Glasgow to make it happen. I'll land at 5:15pm on a Friday and then need to be on a bus at 6:45am the next day. In between these hours I need to buy gas for my stove (cannot carry it on plane).

Are there any late night vendors of gas in Glasgow? Or any locals willing to hide a can for me under a rock somewhere?

Morvich. I could gamble on the shop at Shiel Bridge but the guy in there seemed a tad on the unfriendly side last visit

Pretty sure Inverinate garage sells gas - just up the road from Morvich

Where are you stopping for the night? You could ask them if they would accept a parcel delivered to you at their address.

It's going to be a last minute hotel. I thought of an Amazon locker but you can't have gas in those.

Inverinate garage might be a good shout. They were very friendly.

Aye all being well I'll be dining their next Wednesday!
Note that streetview shows an outdoor shop next to the Community Centre / public loo / en-suite bivvy spot just up from Eilean Donan Castle - its now a cafe.

Morvich has a campsite (Caravanning Club) so they might have gas if they are open. Otherwise Inverinate is just the other side of the valley - going west, away from Shiel Bridge.

Are you driving back up there afterwards for a celebratory meal?

I've just had to Google where Eilean Donan Castle is  didn't notice it when I rode past, but that might say more about my physical state at the time rather than how picturesque it is

Find a 24hr Tesco near the airport - the superstores have a camping section

Worth giving Cliff at Kintail Crafts a ring.
His shop is at the junction of the Morvich loop road.

When are you there Dave, and what size / type of canister do you need?
Can gas be sent via Amazon or similar? My brother is also nearby and could have something sent.

At the moment it looks like 4th June arrival in Glasgow. I need a screw fitting ideally for Jetboil or screw on canister

I just checked and there’s a Decathlon not too far from the airport - open until 8.

Might be worth doing click and collect with Decathlon as the last time I went in my local shop for gas they didn't have any in stock.

Maybe Ft William would be an option if you can't get any in Glasgow.
Looks like the bus stops for 15 minutes in Fort William? That would give you time to run across to the NevisSport and get gas. Depends on the roads and what time the bus actually arrives into Ft William though.

This is genius. Last time I was on it , got in early.

But I need Glasgow to come out of level 3 for this to happen at all :-(

Yes, tick off another big chunk of the trail seeing as I couldn't make the HT550 tomorrow. I need my Scottish wilderness fix

EDIT: plans changed, now getting a flight to Spain. Can someone help me with weapons at the other end?

I'm using the amber zone shield, it's worked so far to keep the riff raff out.
