Bar bags... talk to me

Post by ootini »

I need a small, but not too small, bar bag for day rides. Ideally something capable of carrying some lunch, phone, keys, wallet etc.
I already have a full bar harness setup, but thats over the top. I like the look of the Acepac option sold by Stu but they're currently OOS and have been for a while i think.
There's a few options available on Amazon such as RockBros, but I'm not sure of the quality.
Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

I'm told new stocks of all Acepac towards the end of April ... thank you Brexit.

I use a revelate that clips onto my revelate harness. I like it.
These are cool and UK made:

I was going to get a Revelate pocket asI wanted something water proof but they were also out of stock. So I got a topeak bar loader (for xmas!) And so far its been great with or without the bar roll. I had to do some swapping around of buckles so it clips to my sweet roll. It's waterproof, has a wee insert with zipped pockets for valuables and is just the right size.

I need something like this too... summat with around 7 litre capacity (only cos anything bigger would mean it doesnt fit) to fit between the roadie bars of my 42cm wide bars. Don't like it when the hands catch on the bag...

I can't help with bar bags, but I bought a Rockbros frame bag last year as a cheap and temporary stop gap, and I like it so much I haven't replaced it. I use it to carry tools, lock, spare tube etc, and whatever random items I pick up along the way. The quality seems great, welded construction and a water resistant zip. I thought that the rear brake cable would start to wear through it but there's no sign of that.

I have a Revelate Yakataga. It'll clip on to the Harness if I'm carrying a lot or will just attach with velcro straps for day rides. Expensive as its properly waterproof but I wanted that due to taking it Packrafting.

Another one with an Revelate Egress pocket. I can fit my all the riding clothing/gloves and food I would need for a day. I did snap the closure buckle as it is part plastic but I bought a metal g-hook off of eBay and it is now super sturdy. Fits easily inside 42cm hoods but it does encroach a bit on the centre of the tops if you have large hands.

You want to wait for the Acepac bar bag to come back in stock. Honestly, it's the best bit of cycling luggage I've bought for years.
I'm just going outside ...

I’ve just bought one of these
https://www.ovejanegrabikepacking.com/p ... dlebar-bag

And it seems well made **BUT** I haven’t tried it outside yet, so can’t comment on whether it’s good or not

Bought it from https://velotastic.co.uk/ and it was posted out next day :-bd

Looking into this myself at the moment. Carradice do the Zipped Roll which looks great but the leather straps put me off a bit. The other contenders I’ve found are the Restrap Canister and this one from Outer Shell (a bit more than I wanted to spend but looks perfect) https://www.tokyobike.co.uk/outer-shell ... 22306.html

I've got a zipped roll as a permanent fit on one bike, it's good. Not that light but looks like it'll last well. Straps aren't ideal for quick fitting but could be replaced by Voile straps. The main (fairly minor) drawback with it are the pop studs for the zip cover, a bit faffy sometimes.

They do a 'bikepacking' version of the zipped roll made out of cordura rather than cotton duck and webbing straps rather than leather

At the small end of the scale you have something like the Alpkit Gnaro - 3L or so. Then it's up to a couple of Apidura bags at 7 & 8L. After that it's the 10L+ models from the like of Restrap, Alpkit and the rest. For truly massive loads there's the Revelate Sweetroll (or harness of your choice and the Saltyroll bag)

An alternative that I've got set up on one bike is the DrJ0n StrapDeck allied with Voile straps and dry bag size of your choice.

I ended up grabbing a Lomo 3l from Amazon. It arrived today and I must say, it's spot on. Small/Big enough to fill the gap nicely.
