Just bought me a retro tent

Post by TheBrownDog »

Those of you familiar with my work with know of my penchant for retro camping stuff. Well, this morning, on Gumtree, I saw this.

Image

An original Cabanon Adventure 4 tent. If you know the marque, you know they have been making interesting family tents out of lightweight canvas since before dinosaurs ruled the earth, and that they are good.

I messaged the chap (who turned out to be on the parish council and a decent fella) He says they bought it in 1998, used it once on a three night trip and then put it in the shed. And that was that. He still had the original receipt from 1998 and the brochure it came with.

Stiffy activated.

I got there soon as I could. We unfolded the tent and while the steel poles had a bit of surface rust here and there, the rest is like new.

Mine.
I'm just going outside ...

Nice tent and a great steal!
What worries me is, is 1998 now retro or am I officially old?

No, you're not old but, yeah, it's definitely retro, which is about style, not just age - something styled in a fashion of the recent past. I would not have looked out of place at the 1976 scout jamboree at Moogerah Dam.

You have me thinking though. It could also be "vintage", though there is lively debate about this, as some believe to be vintage it has to be between 50-100 years old and should only apply to wines and cars. What it definitely is not is "antique" as, while it is certainly of high quality, it's just not old enough.

We might also consider whether to refer to it as "old school" or something produced "back in the day" or being from the "olden days".

All of this has also got me wondering whether I have too much time on my hands and am allowing myself to be so easily distracted

We had a six berth tent like that, 3x compartment inner. Is the same size section at the back. It took up most of a volvo 145 estate..Canvas was dark green and sap green sides. The endless summer of 76, draught & lady bird swarms. Only our Tent turned red, the other not affected.
Don't fret or loose sleep😂 this was a one off. Ps they bite.

But for all those summers on ghd continent very happy days... :-bd
