Wide range cassette

Post by Fat tyre kicker »

Apologies if this has been covered before but I'm putting a wide range
Cassette on my both my bikes as I rebuild them, I'm running 9 speed and
Want to stay that way, I've kept an article on doing this ( off a U.s forum)
The guy uses Wolftooth sprockets but this is a bit speedy at £50 each !
I've found a cheaper alternative so I can get 2 for that price, the author
Suggests using a SRAM eagle derailleur and shifter but am I mistaken in
thinking I can use a a normal 9 speed long cage derailleur with a longer
B screw ? Planning on using a 9 speed non indexed thumbie for shifting.
Would I need a goat tooth link thingy as well ?
Sorry for all the questions but I think I've researched too much and
Confused myself

I've got a sunrace 11-40 9 speed cassette on the straggler which I use with an old pre-shadow rear der and it works fine. (indexed bar end shifters) The top jockey wheel on these is offset from the pivot so it will clear up to a 42 without any extra gubbins. No clutch but its rarely dropped the chain with a thick/thin chainwheel. I think sun race may do an 11-42 9p speed.

sram 9 speed worked up to 42 [ use a casette etender at 9 speed but pretty sure i had to get a longer B screw to make it work and it was its limits - probably a long cage X0 at a guess

I got this by Sunrace for £8 instead of the GoatLink which seemed rather pricey. Out of stock with Merlin but Google might help.

Alternatively there seem to be loads of Chinese / Knock-off / Ebay / Amazon alternatives. Whether and how well they work I don't know but the Sunrace sorted me when fangling the Gryphon to 1x using bar-end shifters.

Another vote for the Sunrace 11-40 cassette, I have one on my spare fat bike (that I lend out to fatty curious friends). I use it with a Shadow XT mech (no clutch) and a cheapo chinesium 30 tooth NW chainring that I got off eBay. It all worked fine off the bat, no Goatlinks or extended b tension screws were required and it indexes perfectly with an XT 9speed shifter.
