Fattest 29er tyre for Ramin 3+ rear?

Post by redefined_cycles »

The Chronicle 3.0 won't fit the rear end on 29er rims (35mm inner). Proabbaly quite obvious. Wanna get the next best thing without reverting back to 650b.

What makes mist sense? 2.6×29?

Thanks

I think a lot will depend on the actual tyre shaf. Not all tyres of the same size are the same size

Shaf, I've been riding the Vittoria Mezcal 29 x 2.6" (former and new version) for about 2 years now and for me it ticks all the boxes for my everyday/offroad touring bike.

Sidewall has proven to have a great balance of weight, suppleness and longevity.
Grip is surprisingly good for its speed and it's fast.
Also good wet grip. Tread wears down pretty fast though.

Lovely shape on a i30 mm rim, but will likely be great on i35 too. Decent volume, true to size.

Use the search function on here, I think there are quite a few who use and like them.

If it's good enough for you (and I can find em in the UK) that should sort me out. Wearing down faster isn't too much a problem as it might also give some extra grip. Thanks Gian...

[Once I confirm it'll fit  ... whats the gap on your chainstay before it narrows down to the BB junction ]

For reference the 650b Chronicle × 3.0 fitted the rear fine and was 77mm on the 45mm inner LoveMud rims. Same tyre in 29er version on the Hope 35mm inner came up at 73mm... and its currently wedged in. So I'm gonna go with needing at least a width of less than 60mm...

Oh... just realised it says fattest, not fastest...

Well... no idea how much space your bike has, but eg. Maxxis Minion DHF and DHR 29 x 3" are about 2.75" on a i30 mm at about 1.5 bar. This may be a narrow rim for a 3" tyre, but the 3" Minions have a really nice shape on those rims.
Hefty and slow, but loads and loads of grip.

2.6" Mezcal and Barzo are true to size on i30 mm rims. The Mezcal being a tad wider than the Barzo. The Barzo, as stated before on another thread, makes an awful shape on i30 mm. Bespite the more agressive tread it doesn't corner better than the Mezcal.

On my everyday bike? About 85 mm.

Less than 60 mm? Most of my 2.35/2.4" come in at 60 - 61 mm on i30 mm rims...

The 2.6 Mezcals have been 66 or 67 mm wide.

Thanks James... from what I can see from that image, the gap is 79mm... so getting a (actual width) tyre to 65mm would work with space of about 8mm either side of chainstay.

Ordered myself a 2.5x29er Onza Ibex for £18 to get things rolling :-bd

Just for reference Shaf I've just put a WTB Ranger 2.6 on a Halo Vapour rim (30mm internal width) and it measures 67mm at the widest point. I know all tyres measure up differently so hopefully your 2.5 Onza will be okay.

Really appreciate that. Yup, hopefully it'll be either less or a couple of mm more at most. If it doesn't fit it was only 18£ so should be able to sell on or keep as spare. Hope there's no tubless issues at that price (didn't state TR)... :-bd

Quite some options then. I guess down to 5 mm each side is a go for most cases.
My girlfriend rides Ibex(es) on her trailbike and she's keen of them.

Yes 79mm, but that's at 350mm from the axle. From memory a 27.5 x 2.8 tyre is approx 740mm OD so the tread shoulder or widest point is about 700mm OD / 350mm from axle. A 29 x 2.6 may be ~755-760mm OD with a shoulder 360mm or so from axle. That 8mm gap if the tyre shoulder is at the 350mm point reduces quite a bit if the shoulder moves fwd 10-15mm.

The bike was designed as a 29er or 27 Plus when 2.8 was Plus (3.0 Bridgers at a squeeze) and 29 x 2.6 is in between those 2 sizes really.

Thanks James. I can tell you that the 650b 3.0 Chronivles on the 45mm internal Love Mud rims fit it well

I will t4y and aim for 2m4 or 2.5 in 29er version. Hopefully at some point this or next week I will swap the gearing over from the Aonder and get it out and about...

Thanks again everyone

Glad to hear your having fun with the Ramin Shaf. I used a Bonty XR3 29x2.4 on it for a while with loads of clearance. Quite a narrow rim tho.

Thanks for that Alex. I've ordered some lovely grips for a fiver for it, popped some Hope wheels (never had actual Hope wheels, just the hubs) in there, a Pro Condor saddle, Ritchey WCS seatpost (31.6, looks super stiff, might hurt) and some XT cranks. Am enjoying this build and trying to keep the ethos as close to what you had it (just ride!)...

Hopefully the helmet will get sold at some point and either go to the Yemen hunger crisis (mainly orphans I believe but God knows best) or some other worthy cause.

Briefly considered a bit of XTR for it but that might be going a bit overboard

Thanks again for your hospitality when I came down. Much appreciated and apparently you guys have (Frimley) one of the top 8 hospitals in the country (they hoaxed me as they pride themselves on not using agency staff so booked me to aend to their dirty sister hospital in ...).

Thanks again mate and look forearr to sending you a pic of the finished article. Gotta get some shifts in first though unfortunately...
