I recently changed tyres to cope better with the snow/ice mxies we're having lately.
I thought it might be of some interest that Maxxis 3" wide Minion DHF and DHR II show a decent, not too bulb like shape on a seemingly narrow (internally) 30 mm rim, though it may be the limit to get the shoulder lugs to do their work properly.
Drag is huge in an unfair comparison to 2.6" Vittoria Mezcal I swapped them against. So is the grip on soft surfaces.
It also comes with a large weight penalty, again very obvious, but thanks to the much stiffer sidewall, it hardly squirms at the pressures I'm currently running, which is 0.8 and 1 bar, respectively. Despite the narrow rim.
Measured width is just shy of 71 mm/2.8".
They're definately staying on through our winter and I'll likely leave them on (my everyday/offroad touring bike), until they're worn down since riding with them offers good training.
Happy winter riding folks.

Re: 29 x 3" Maxxis on i30 mm rims
I'd concur, been running them for the last couple of winters (and got a couple in storage as they aren't available anymore) and I like them. On wider rims mind but grip is very good. I actually was surprised that they didn't feel quite as draggy as the weight and tread indicated...
Re: 29 x 3" Maxxis on i30 mm rims
Good idea. I might do the same.
Really liking them and since I'd replace the current rims with slightly wider ones, things would only get better. Shame Maxxis have dropped all their 29 x 3" tyres.

Thanks for correcting my statement.
I believe the Chronicles are more "true" 29+ or proper 3" tyres and likely wouldn't work well at all on i30 mm rims.
Just guessing.

I have done that and you are right, they are a bit bulb shaped and dont work super well at low pressures. You can use them and ride around just fine, but some of the advantages are lost and they are better on a wider rim for sure.

Really? I went looking for them last year and came up blank, got any links?
Looking forward to trying the bonty XR4s - I think they may be better than the minions.

They're still listed in Maxxis catalogue unlike the 27.5 ( which I use). I did see some on ebay recentley
Re: 29 x 3" Maxxis on i30 mm rims
hmmm...
I had a closer look and it seems quite inconsistent as how they are listed.
It depends on which Maxxis site you look.
International, UK, Germany, US etc.
On the International site the 29 x 3 Minions are still listed

Must read "has Maxxis really dropped any 29 x 3" tyre?"
