XS bikes for 5ft women riders

Post by JKM »

hello all.
asking for a friend... i have been trying to find her a bike for the last six months and the general lack of availability is problematic.
she wants an all round everyday bike that can luggage for an overnight and light off roading as well as just popping to the shops.
flat-bar only and suitable for a 5ft rider (well 5' 3/4" i think she says)
so looking for XS hybrids, hardtails, second hand, all sorts really up to £1k mut she would really prefer to buy new at around £750 which is a bit of a shame as its probably going to be a bit heavy at that price unless second hand.

i was going to try and build her something using some nice retro XT bits and some new mavic 26" v brake wheels i had lying around, but i just couldn't find a frame that made it worthwhile. i do still have some 29" wheels and a pair of Judy Golds but i cant find any XS 29er frames and i think its probably much too big a wheel size for her anyway.

one thing that makes it difficult is that she definitely does not want anything remotely "girly"so no pinks, light blues etc. dark autumnal tones, blacks, greys etc would be good. matt green would be her #1 choice but i think she will need a respray for that.

if anyone on here is of a similar stature or has friends/partners who are the same size, i would love to hear what they are riding.

many thanks

On-One used to make an XS 26" Inbred. Dee had one that BDS bought off her for his lad. If you could find one of those it'd be perfect. I recall they were 14".

Although, I see that PX have re-launched the Jack Flash. On paper, it's a jump bike frame which means it'll be small - in this case 15" seat-tube and the raw version is £100.

my wife is 5ft on the nail.
she rides a 42cm Surly straggler 650b. this is also available in a 38cm.
it takes a 50cm tyre. it carries whatever you want.

I am looking for the same myself, my daughter at 10 years old has just hit 5ft and her bike i bought her last year, is now dwarfed..

There is a few on ebay if you type in "xs mountain bike" Spec. Hardrock, Cailbre Bossnut.

But why do people insist on "Collection Only" in the middle of a lockdown?!

Mate Ive got a small 26er OO Inbred frame somewhere in my shed you can have for not much money if you're still interested in building a bike up. Its white and a touch used but very good condition and will happily fit someone 5". PM me if youre interested.

Because lock down or not, wrapping something big and cumbersome, and then schlepping it to your courier point, or having to hang around for a courier collection which NEVER happens on time, is a total bumache.

My wife is pretty much that heigh, and her Liv (giant) tempt is a great fit in XS. No idea about stock anywhere, but I think they even went down to an XXS in some models

thanks for all the tips.
in the end she decided to go mainstream with a Liv Rove 1 hybrid.
even in XXS they still had to take a hacksaw to the seatpost...
