Thin leather for recovering a saddle

Post by slarge »

Morning - I have a saddle that has sat in the spares box as it’s really tatty, but it fits my bum like a fresh nappy and I’d like to recover it in thin black leather. All the easy to find sources on google are thick leather off cuts but I’m after really thin leather (0.5mm or so).

Anyone got any sources or a knackered old leather jacket I can scrounge?

Thanks muchly

Steve, you should be able to find some natural Veg Tan leather in 1mm. If you 'case' it but soaking it for a minute in warm water, you can then mould it to the exact shape of your saddle. Let it dry overnight and you've got a cover. Glue it down, trim the edges underneath, add some dye of your choice and Bob's your uncle.

It'll be much easier / neater than trying to stretch finished leather over the saddle.

Do be aware that veg tan will mark whilst wet, I tend to put gloves on and handle it carefully.

This was made by the same process Steve. Needs a coat of wax to knock some of the shine back.
