My long term aim .... get into healthier eating habits.
This is both the key and the crux. I have some mental health issues around food and exercise which I've done a lot of work on and made big improvements with, but I also need to get to a better weight too.

I really can't be trusted around sweets/cakes/biscuits/crisps or buffets! Luckily alcohol has no place in my life so that's a non-issue, but I really need to treat the above foods like an alcoholic would treat booze and avoid.

I've found limiting sweet stuff to 'fuel' on rides has worked quite well though. But crisps are my nemesis.

Tracking properly via MFP or similar can be a total eye opener if you've never done it. You can really see where you could have made much better choices to have more volume of food, cut out empty calories from things like crisps, or allow for things like a meal out. I'm back on it, it seems to really help me see what I'm doing.

Dave... Work that I've come to is a community shift where it looked like the client was in dire straits... Work at work (ie. ICU is getting mental again but it seems a slow filling up of the ICU with Covid.. but it's happening!) is indeed getting busier  so take care out there pls folks (I think its the few people that end up needing to be in isolation but don't and then impact others horribly - but Gods knows..).

Tips that I've found working for me over the past few years (added together) are...

What doesn't work:
Counting calories in single units/items (what a chore)

Being stressed (makes me wanna eat more)

After a long ride when the metabolism has sped up a little, coming back and continuing to eat... or rewarding a ride with lots of post ride food!

What works for me
Not going to the CoOp after a long days work (for cashew nuts and a large choc.

Stopping buying the big family size bars of choc voa they're cheaper!

Weighing myself every day or every other day.

Cutting out sugar from tea/coffee and not bringing ice cream home (I end up eating it all, almost)

Oh... fizzy pop and ginger beer as well as flavoured drinks and cordial... I've cut em out. All the above has just about kept me from going closer to the 90kg mark. 90kg is where I would have been had I not had this here thread to encourage and remind me... so thanks everyone

NB. The everesting (attempt, not all and hopefully off roading) I will start later in the month (next) which should see about 2kg loss :o

My issue with crisps! Why pay a stupid 70p a packet when I can get a sack of multiple crisps for whatever it is?!

Our local shop sells six packs of seabrooks for £1.20! Swines! Sour cream and chives, Worcester sauce, beef, cheese and onion, ham, or mixed.

I maybe need to choose a different local shop!

Re drinks; I have a sparkling water habit. So, worse for the planet than it is for me. The only calories i drink is milk in tea or coffee.

01/01/21: 72.5kg
-------------
Original target hit in May (60kg)
New Target: Sub 63kg (Maintaining)
-------------
16/07/2021: 62.6kg (+0.1kg)
23/07/2021: 62.9kg (+0.3kg)
30/07/2021: 62.9kg (+0.0kg)

Need to tidy up my diet. Have noticed a lot more processed food creeping in, and far less veggies / salad.

Big effort over the next few months required to create time for cooking, as in my experience I eat so much healthier when I have time to make proper meals.

Up and out for work early tomorrow for a 2 hour trip with two ferries to the tip of the UK , so will weigh in Saturday.

Not that I hold much hope for change, seems a hilly commute to the office makes you quite hungry! It's not even far, just 10k each way with 180m elevation  But then there is work in between with a variable amount of walking/hiking and driving.

Tried eating before I go (yoghurt, blue berries, protein powder smoothie) , but then I definitely want something when I get there, so eating once there is the way to go, but what? Greek Yoghurt or cottage cheese with fruit doesn't seem to cut the mustard. Porridge gives me indigestion. Maybe a couple of plain Muller rice...

Needs to be something to just put in my small saddle bag and not cereal based.

Well at least I didn't go up.

On post-ride food, I normally inhale a banana and then try to avoid the chocolate.

Technically that's yesterday's reading as I was out last night and at a hotel overnight. Probably a good thing as I can guarantee I'm at least 2kg up since yesterday!

Still really struggling with my diet. I suspect mostly due to time / stress.

redefined_cycles wrote: Fri Jul 30, 2021 10:43 pm Ended up adding about 4kg of weight whilst I was trying to remove it in prep for an 'Everesting'. Decided it'd be too boring anyway but will use it as an opportunity to do some research and possibly lose some weight in the process.

Research Q being:

"How many feet of climbing can I do on ZamZam* alone before I feel it's time to chuck in the towel".

Hopefully depart at about 0400 and I have a supply of about 7 litres. Weight today has been 84.2kg so am expecting to come back weighing (will weigh myself the day after as per normal controls) about 82kg InshaAllah. I also expect I'll hopefully manage at least 50 climbs with 83 bieng the full Everesting of 'The Jossie' which is my chosen climb.

*ZamZam - according to islam - being the water from the well at Mekkah which was found by Hagar and her son... bit more detail here
This obviously isn't working for me. I knew ZamZam (well water, in the walls of the sacred mosque at Mekkah) had a certain calorific value and I've had a time when I went all out on a road ride thinking I had it with me, hit the wall (bonked) and came home in a heap. Only to be told by the missus that it was just plain water that day. Anyway, I digress...

So I've been climbing on nothing but the zamzam water. Good efforts at about 200watts average pace which is near my ftp (functional threshold thingy) so I wasn't expecting to lose weight as such as I believe you need to be at an easy state of exercise to burn fat. Problem is that I've ended up in about 11000ft of climbing (up and down and up... etc) I've ended up putting wieght on. Now at 86kg

So plan today is to do some climbing on good old water (some local spring sold at local supermarket) and maybe a sarnie before and/or after. Will obviously keep the pace low as it'll be too much going with just water. Not gonna eat much today for the mo either.

Watch this space as target remains 80kg (ish)... :o

Fasted everesting? Sounds like a particularly cruel form of self torture, but well done on your climbing efforts. The body probably does odd things when you're stressing it like that.

A good restart, now to gain some momentum and avoid some work stresses that are my usual downfall.

Nah... not actually done the Everesting just yet. Working up towards it. I've figured that 2 bottles of zamzam water (1400ml) gives me 14 climbs which equals 5000ft

Watch this space.

Came to work. Noticed my belly looks like I'm becoming a bit of a Danny Devito  Grabbed a tape measure and measured the belly.

99cm at the biggest point. Plan today (aside from the breakfast this am) is to not eat much. Coffee if I feel hungry and target of 97cm at least by the end of shift. Weight this am = 85.6kg... Really poor show!

Yesterdays plan kindof worked (Alhamdulillah)... Ate so little at work that even one of the locals noticed. Got asked why I wasn't eating today which probably says alot and as to how much I probably eat on a normal day!

Had 1xcoffee (or possibly 2) without sugar obviously and at lunch had a pack of double boiled eggs from the in-work CoOp. Afterwards when finishing I got a bit carried away with 2x oreo muffins and a coyple of choc biscuits

Ate when I got home, properly. This am weight 84.0kg, so down by 1.6kg. Phew :-bd

85.9kg (Jan 1st)
84.0kg (Jan 8th)
83.5kg (just... 6th Feb)
83.6kg (12/3/2021)
83.7kg (23/4/2021)
82.1kg (7/5/2021)
84.3kg (4/6/2021)
84.6kg (18/6/2021) struggling a bit to keep less calories going in

Howdy all,

Not weighed myself in a while as I can't face it. Sufficient other life shenanigans occurring that I haven't even really thought about my consumption or weight for weeks.

Laying low on the booze and exercising whenever possible so not gaining anything but certainly not losing anything either - bum!

Is there a prize for being in this group every year, year in year out, whatever the weather and consistently gaining weight each year whilst promising to do better???

Sigh. It wouldn't be so bad, but I've really been trying this week (to the point where it's negatively affected my training). Just wouldn't seem to come off, with the scale weight essentially the same for the last three days.

Just too much stress right now. Tempted to just say bollocks to it and not add additional stress by worrying about my weight for a few weeks (as I'm on holiday)... that's easier said than done though. I generally like to go into a holiday weighing a bit less than I should, and this will be the first time I've not managed that in quite a while.

Yes... but this years not anyone else's year and next ywar doesn't look good either.

Good news is that you, Gairy, are this and any other years lucky winner. Tub of Ben and Jerrys on it's way over to you just shortly. Remind me your postal details (somewhere in Spain right... might melt by then. Would you be kind enough to get yourself a standard tub and I'll PM/paypal the cost over to you

That went well?? (like seriously... you won some Ben and Jerrys... don't eat it all at once)

NB. Do check back in again next year :-bd

Yay! Meaningful weight loss once again! :-bd

In an ideal world it'd be due to saintly behaviour and lots of enjoyable exercise rather than being on day 05 of f#@&ing horrible Covid symptoms and not really being able to eat but I'll take any silver lining on offer at this point.....

I feel like utter crap (but no worrying symptoms yet) and so let's see if I can lose a bit more before I get better.

Loving life right now!
