Best waterproof cycling trousers

Post by JohnClimber »

Which waterproof cycling trousers that you would recommend and why please?

I wish there were some Columbia Outdry one, but I don't think that there is.

Don't have any myself but when researching some for myself recently Showerpass seemed to be highly rated.

I’ve had a pair of their waterproof gloves for ages - best I’ve used. Think they use outdry.
Just bought some of their hybrid part waterproof part soft shell trousers to try. Bit snugger than I’d hoped but really well thought out and top quality. The uk website / shop seems to be just one guy and he’s very helpful!

OMM Kamleika get very good reviews but they are too short for me alas.
I've had...
Cheap vaude ones - very good for the money but no zips so a struggle to get on over boots.
Berghaus goretex paclite - OK and they do three leg lengths but they didn't last very long. Just press studs at the bottom so a bit flappy
Rab downpour pertex shield. Very light, good close fit, draw cord and press studs at the bottom to keep them out of your chain. Fine if its just light drizzle for a couple of hours and very light but useless in heavy rain
Berghaus Changste pant (current). No different leg lengths annoyingly and a bit flappy but very very waterproof and breathable (mix of goretex active and paclite plus)

On reflection instead of the changstes (which I got for just under 100 quid) I wish I'd got some gore C3 or C5s as they would be a better fit and are even lighter than the rab pertex ones.

I had a Keela jacket in the early days on my hill walking and liked it.
Cheers I'll take a look

Vaude Drop Pants II

Great fit for any kind of travel on a bike and on foot.
I have absolutely no issues putting them on with size EU 45 (UK10.5?) shoes.

Light, yet strong in the right place. Not so breathable, but who sweats hard on the legs?

As eco friendly as it currently gets, not like eg. Patagonia.

Stealth - good for local riding and commuting can get cold in the wet as its soft shell and not really a beading DWR - one pair is 10 years old and still waterproof- not sure it would be my choice for 14 hours wearing though as they would be cold but my choice for overnighters as they do work.

Alpkit - for carrying seem to work but as above unlikely to survive a crash

Paramo anaolgy trousers - recommended from here - yet to use in anger - so unable to say if they are the perfect solution.

Same here. £88 OutdoorGB. Double-use: biking and walking.

Depends on use, I have a pair of berghaus packlite trousers with the full length zips which are still going after 6 years. Good for throwing on over other kit.
If it’s chilly and rainy my Paramo Velez trousers are all day comfy in the worst imaginable conditions, back in February I crossed Dartmoor in a big storm including deep stream crossings and was happy, they also have ankle Velcro to keep things out of the chain, they also helped me through the last winter event  recommended for nasty conditions where you’re going to keep them in all day, not very packable though.

I tend to wear cycling trousers all year round unless its specifically warm.
Gore C3 Gore-Tex Active Trail Trousers is what I use. They keep the wind off you big style thanks to the Windstopper fabric and are good at keeping the wet stuff out. On very cold days I'd wear some leg warmers underneath.
5* in my opinion.
As the C3 is a few years old now, I bet you can get the newer fabric which should be 'better' still....

To a certain extent, however you always remain comfortable. Paramo stuff works in a different way to most waterproof stuff, I’d say it’s not completely waterproof but it constantly transports moisture to the outside, on my February Dartmoor trip I had to Ford some streams up to my crotch, within a few minutes i was comfortable.
Paramo stuff is very much like marmite.
