Reccommend my mum a headtorch.

My mum wants a headtorch (?), so I thought I'd ask the collective. I'm thinking battery powered rather than USB, although both would be useful. Nothing too bright and something that's easy to use ... read that as, no need for lots of modes, coloured lights or anything confusing or complicated

Alpkit Viper uses 3AAA batteries and has a concentrated beam and a wide beam. Batteries last really well and the older of the 2 I have is about 5 years old and still going strong. The new one has an auto mode where it adjusts the light output to the ambient light which is useful if your hands are busy/mucky and the light is changing.

I was going to say the same (can't remember if mine's a Viper, the design has changed quite a bit since I got mine - it was similar though).

IMO whatever it is it should be a Petzl. I have no experience with other makes because the one I bought a bizzilion years ago was cheap, comfy and is still going strong. Doesn't do rechargeable batts but.

I've been usin a Petzl Tikkina for years. Great for general use, eg, garden in dark, bothies, campsites and so on. About £20. Three AAA batteries...Pretty light with a good quality headstrap. Probably OK for dog walking, maybe not so good for running or biking if she's into that sort of thing!

I really like this as it takes 1 AA, click once for on, click to change through the other three modes then it turns off. Has hi/lo/red/flash red then off. No strobes, no 'long press' to switch off or changes modes so really easy to use. 70g with an alkaline in it.

Pretty much what Cheddar man said from me too. Both my kids have the £3.99 decathlon ones (I think they're doing free delivery today too), and I've had a couple of alpkit ones over the last decade. Happy with all so far.

The good thing about Petzls is that they fit a rechargeable Core battery.

The Thrunite TH20 is excellent, Stuart. Solid, takes a single AA battery. IPX-8 waterproof. No silly flashing or red modes, continuously adjustable beam from dim to bright. The dim 'glow worm' mode is very stealthy, and when you turn it off and on again it goes onto to the mode it was on when you turned it off. So no having to cycle through all the brightnesses.

Just got one for Mrs M to save her treading on badgers/foxes/squirrels or tripping over the deer that has moved in when she is on night manoeuvres in the garden.

Thanks for the input folks. I've gone with a pretty basic Petzl and some rechargeable AAA batteries / charger. Anything that even appears complicated will get stuck in a draw and forgotten about and anything that requires usb charging will sit flat and forlorn on her kitchen worktop ... you know how it is

I know Devon's the hinterlands but you really should consider letting her use the inside toilet in those circumstances
