Going all bushcraft next year

Post by TheBrownDog »

I'm thinking I might have another go at BAM from January and I might do it all bush-crafty. So just a tarp and groundsheet, or my hammock gear, and if I need pole and stakes,, I will fashion them from the environment.

And my cooking will be done in a little twig stove ... and I'll use a fire steel to make the flame from birch bark. I might even carve a few more spoons to eat my stuff. And I reckon if i give myself the time I could quite happily do one of those shelters from sticks and boughs and leaf litter.

My first question of course is whether I'm being a pretentious prick. I think I know the answer.

Sounds like the start of an epic video diary thread. I wish you all the luck in the world and am very much looking forward to watching :-bd

Do one where you're rearing your own geese for down to make bothy slippers and smelting your own iron ore to make a nifty bottle opener/axe holder for your frame. :-bd

Plus you must only eat what you can forage (and not from shops). And drink only recycled water :-bd

Is there a bushcraft way of getting enamel coating onto a mug? If so do that too. :-bd

And, obviously, you have to spin your own twine for dangling the aforementioned mug. :-bd

(Biggest ball of twine details here if anyone was wondering: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biggest_ball_of_twine )

Sounds good Tim

I never tallied it up, but probably did two or three years of bushcrafty BAMs back in the day. Great fun!

Corking idea Tim. But that chair's gonna have to go I'm afraid. Need to knit a wickerwork one everytime out of hazel twigs.

Isn't all water recycled? Unless he takes oxygen and hydrogen cylinders and makes it from scratch

I was thinking about a shorter recycling cycle.....

With your logic everything is recycled, it's just the time to recycle it gets longer

You can get a guide book and everything. Should while away a few hours on those long dark nights - just make sure you've got a good torch.

I'm not sure Im actually doing it yet. I need to grow a hipster beard first and source an ultralight coffee grinder. Social media? Like this place? No like button. Fix that will you Stu?

Surely you can grind your (locally foraged) coffee beans using a couple of rocks?

No way, Jose. No chance, Lance. I've been on the youtube which is on the interweb and I simply cannot be grinding my beans between rocks. I will be far too busy crafting kuksas.

I liken this project to the life of the Amish ... those lovely people who have decided that technology had gone far enough sometime in the mid-19th century, and that was that. Fair play to them, by the way.

For me, it's about blending the stuff I can whittle and burn with the the things I can bring along. On that note, @reg: as such, my chair is coming with me. I can't risk not finding a pitch with a suitable tree stump.
