Base layer choices.

Post by ton »

looking for a new set of base layer stuff. but cant find the stuff i want.

the ones i like and use the most are a set of old northface ones. imagine something as thin as some ladies tights, that are almost seethru. thinner than ron hills or helly smelly ones. well that is what they are like but i cant find em anywhere.

help..

i dont want merino, i have some and it is uncomfy when damp, and itchy, even the good stuff.
i have tried rab bamboo stuff. not warm enough.

any ideas greatly appreciated.

Dhp mesh ones are pretty reasonably priced and work really well.

Patagonia Capilene thermal weight is pretty good. Its like a grid fleece type fabric.

Hard to say for sure but I feel its not quite as warm as 250 weight Merino. Its weighs less and compacts more.

My favourite baselayers are Rab Aeon. Just as you desribe Tony, really thin. I'd liken it more to a fine silk (though it's synthetic). I have two T-shirts and two long-sleeved.

I know you said no Merino..but I am a big fan of the Oex Bamboo/Merino mix kit which works for me in both hot and cold conditions

Dee has one of these. It'll happen look better on her than you Tony but it's very good none the less. Yes, it is Merino but you'd never realise it.

Think these are polypropylene rather than merino.
Excellent but deeply unfashionable.

I quite like Craft base layers: https://craftsportswear.co.uk/collectio ... base-layer which can often be found at discounted prices too.
We go out into the hills to lose ourselves, not to get lost. You are only lost if you need to be somewhere else and if you really need to be somewhere else then you're probably in the wrong place to begin with.

I have some of the planet x long sleeve ones - immediately feel warmer when you put one on.

Cheep and cheerful etc.

+1 for the Craft base layers. I've the t-shirt. Basically a modern version of your grandad's string vest :-bd
