Riding shirts

Post by woodsmith »

Not wanting to look lika MAMIL on the the side of some mountain I ride with baggies over my padded shorts but haven't found the perfect solution for the upper half. My roadie shirts are too close fitting, hiking shirt too baggy and warm. The best I've found so far is a Rab hoodie grid-fleece but its too warm for the summer. And I miss the rear pockets of the typical cycling shirt.

What is your go to bikepacking top/layering system?

Long sleeve merino base and a t-shirt over the top usually, not into the jersey thing at all.

If it's too warm for the base layer then just a merino t-shirt

One of these reasons I bought a hip pack was because it means any top can have "jersey" pockets.

Bamboo base layer (1 or 2), fleece ( :-bd ) (1 or 2), Marmot essence rain jacket or Berghaus condom smock. Lotsa layers, lotsa options. BBB jersey for advertising purposes on events.

I've still got a couple of Lowe Alpine Henley dryflo t-shirts from the 90s. I'll be heartbroken when they finally fall off me in tatters.

When it gets a bit cooler I wear Rohan thermocore shirts for that cycling lumberjack look.

I also wear these for fellwalking, backpacking and canoeing, just to make it look like I never wash my clothes.

Generally a bamboo t shirt or normal cycling jersey for the warmer weather and the same in colder weather with another layer over the top - usually a thicker jersey or thin fleece of some type. If it's wet my waterproof goes on top, if it's just windy then a light windproof.

Sorry, hipster pack.

This thread is about riding in a shirt, in all likelihood of the chequered variety, so I think the above argument is rather void

Variously; bamboo Ts, Hope riding Ts, running Ts (e.g. Inov8) and Groundeffect tops (whichever one suits the temps). I rarely use a fleece as too sweaty so use gilets/vests, either waterproof or the thin softshell type.

Dislike the roadie pockets style but if you must have that then Groundeffect stuff often have MTB-ish style stuff with such pockets.
