got some 40mm rims fitted with 3'' tyres. fancy changing to a set of 2.35 or 2.5 tyre with less tread for a long multi terrain ride.

Re: narrowest tyre on a 40mm rim ?
For one edition of the Tuscany Trail I threw a 2.4" on the front of my Rooster which has 52mm rims - it looked great and rode brilliantly?
But...I tried assuming it wouldn't work and think I got lucky with that particular combo (Stans 'Hugo' with an On-one 'Smorgesbord').
Tubeless and everything!
Was concerned by having the sidewall exposed further by the squaring off but all went well in the end.

Re: narrowest tyre on a 40mm rim ?
Ive got a 35mm rim and it completely depends on tyre brand over listed size, had a maxxis 2.3 on there which squared off lots but now have a specialized 2.6 which measures up small which is fine.
You might find looking at one of the 2.6 from vittoria (the mezacal) or one of the bontrager offerings (x1 or x2) might suit your purpose.

I'd like to see people pictures actually, my WTB resolute or whatever it was in 2.6 was square as a Spongebob. I'd like to be able to switch out different widths if I could :)

you should start a thread reflecting/asking this... Twud' be very interesting and informative (the more stats, the better: brand/model/widths etc) I'd post but a sideview might also help..Escape Goat wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 7:28 pm I'd like to see people pictures actually, my WTB resolute or whatever it was in 2.6 was square as a Spongebob. DTswiss M1700 Plus Boost with 35mm internal width. Have had a 2.5 Maxxis minion DHF 27.5 and fit was fine. You might be pushing it (on your fingers/levers) going less than a 2.5 on a 40mm internal (not forgetting that they don't always measure up as stated). My 2.8 Maxxis IKON rear measures a few mm difference than the front
Re: narrowest tyre on a 40mm rim ?
Within road and gravel, max tyre size 110% of the internal rim measurement.
Re: narrowest tyre on a 40mm rim ?
I be surprised if a squared up 2.4/2.6 or whatever has less drag than a rounder 3" tyre at higher pressure. Contact patch will be as much a function of rim width as tyre. Maxxis produce tyres to match rim width, with 'normal' and 'wide' in several models.
Re: narrowest tyre on a 40mm rim ?
Is squaring-off such a problem if it's a "slick" tyre? Contemplating putting some 2.35 Big Apples on a set of Rabbit Hole rims...

Re: narrowest tyre on a 40mm rim ?
Just remembered, I once fitted some 2.4" Conti' X-Kings on 40mm rims ... they're a big volume tyre for the stated size so worked really well. Sadly, the sidewalls always leaked.
May the bridges you burn light your way
Re: narrowest tyre on a 40mm rim ?
40mm rims are now going. i have fallen out with plus size tyres and rims.
Re: narrowest tyre on a 40mm rim ?
This may or may not help
But A while ago I was trying to find the minimum tyre size I could put on my 30mm internally sized rim and stumbled across this equation
Take the tyre size say 45mm divide it by 0.4 to give you the minimum internal rim width they will work with in this case 18mm or
To give the maximum internal width a 45mm tyre will work with divide 45mm by 0.8 giving you 36mm
Somewhere in between 18mm and 36mm being the optimism internal rim width for a 45mm tyre .
Hope this helps
