Midge nets

Post by Bearlegged »

Hi folks, has anyone got any advice on what makes a good midge (head) net?
I've seen warnings that cheaper ones may stop mosquitoes, but smaller, midgey things can sneak through.

Two candidates here:
https://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk ... dnet-p6815
https://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk ... adnet-p179

The Sea to Summit one promises 310 holes/cm2 versus 178 holes per cm2 for the Coghlans one. Am I right in thinking more holes = finer mesh = better protection?

I've got the S2S Ultra Fine and it kept them out. Their own details say it's made for midges

Smidge also make one

Cheaper, but it's green I think which some say is harder to see through.

Yep, more holes, the finer the mesh. Also worth considering that darker colours are said to be more attractive to midges.

I use a cheapo 'Highlander' one. Stops midges no bother but mozzies can sting through any net. You have to wear a brimmed cotton hat round which you head net hangs so that the mozzies can't get to you.....

Mountain Warehouse one works fine.

edit as we don't have midges but other winged bitey stingy things I took to wrapping my cycle helmet in my head net to stop things dancing on top of my head this summer.
Points for double use?

We just carry the sort of front brimmed caps that roadie cyclists wear. Very light and compact. It works well.

I got stung by mozzies through my bb cap! It is a lightweight lycra one mind so a normal cotton cap would be ideal!

And a pic for Bob
