An entertaining series of photos on the Guardian website.
There are theories at the bottom of my jargon.

We had fish and chips by the river in Shoreham, today, and the amount of people out on bikes was wonderful to see. All ages, sizes and niches (including a tricycle) were in evidence and, surprisingly, a large proportion of them seemed to using their bike as an alternative to the car - shopping, meeting friends, going for a cafe visit or just going to the beach.

Not that many MTB or road bike users, so it does seem like the idea of a bike being a sustainable form of transport does seem to be gaining ground.
Whether this continues to any degree, when the weather takes a turn for the worse, is the key factor.
