cassette spares

Post by techno »

the smallest 4 sprockets on my sunrace cassette are worn to the point of slipping but the rest of the cassette is ok.
will it be alright to replace these with new ones of the same size (11-13-15-17) from a shimano cassette?
hopefully it'll be cheaper to buy 4 shimano sprockets than a whole cassette!

I'd be surprised if the ramps match. Might work, maybe with a glitchy change along the way.

Personally, I'd just change the whole thing. Chances of a used chain meshing well with new sprockets and old ones / resultant hastened wear etc.

Can't see why not, though the ramps probably/may not line up between SR and Shimano (^ beat to it!). It'll shift though. SJS usually have spare cassette parts in stock.

One of the things I like about Sunrace cassettes is they will sell you the bottom few sprockets on their own, understanding they will be the ones you've worn out way before the 42/46/50 sprocket.

I've managed to do this before but with used cogs of the same brand (Shimano). It worked ok but AFAIR it wasn't long before I got slipping from elsewhere (in my case the front granny chainring I think)

Conclusion I came to was to just change the cassette as a whole next time (though it was in the interests of ongoing research so a good test). Think I eventually changed the whole drivetrain bar the cranks...

Unfortunately my cassette is 10sp and that's the 11sp version. I've not found the 10sp equivalent yet....

That was my first port of call, unfortunately the parts from them cost more than a cassette!!!
eBay is looking much better, cost wise.

It's a £20 repair Vs a £45 replacement though. And if it doesn't work I've got 40% of a new cassette anyway :-bd

I haven't searched for it in the UK (bought my sunrace cassettes from ze Germans so I knew they did the sprockets), but they exist for sure.
