29 plus carbon fork options

Post by robbie »

Looking for a rigid fork to suit 29 plus wheels on a stache frame. Boost or non boost dosnt really matter as have hope hubs. Was thinking about the trek 1120 ones but at £315 id consider cheaper alternatives.
Any recomendations?
Cheers

The 1120 forks are supposed to be a direct replacement for the suspension fork currently fitted. But yes might be better to try and reduce the A2C length? I'm not too clued up on it tbh. So feel free to chip in with some geometry advice👍

Not much choice on 29er+ specific forks.

Travers Prong forks £359
https://www.traversbikes.com/store.html ... y=15761046

Or Lauf Carbonara
https://www.laufcycling.com/product/lauf-carbonara
A lot more pricier and no fork bolts but lots more comfort

Either are on the pricier side of your budget I would guess

I recently got some of these. Think they were £90 delivered.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32848680650.html?

Same as the Selcof that Planet-X are punting for £260. Delivery took 2 months. Really like them. Not noodly, but not overly harsh. 400kms in and teeth still intact and no facial reconstructive surgery needed yet. Not sure of clearance, currently running a 2.6 on i35 rim with plenty of space, but can pop a pic up tomorrow if needs.

Thanks all

How will that compare to the suspension fork currently fitted?

Exotic carbon forks would do if you can find any, I recently got a 2nd hand monocoque version and there's room for 3inch tyres. Sensible A-C options too.

Micheal Travers can't log on but asks

"I need to know the current crown to dropout length please"

Please let him/us know this and he'll sort it out for you

Pretty sure the guys at Shand will sell you the 29+ fork that is used on the Bahookie.

https://www.shandcycles.com/shop/bikes/bahookie

Could have them any colour I think too. Boost, 528ATC, 51mm offset.

OK. Sag is normally about 20%.
20% of 110mm is 22mm.
That gives you a required A2C of 523mm (or thereabouts). In practice I reckon anything 510mm to 530mm will be fine.

So prong or the 1120 one I think.
Prong is a bit shorter A2C so that will quicken the steering and slightly lower the bb height but not really noticable correct?

Hmm. I usually don't mind increasing A2C a little but 40mm seems like quite a big reduction. For a bike that is likely to be ridden well loaded, I'm not sure that "quicker steering" is a benefit either. Slower steering usually feels a bit more stable, especially if you've a handlebar bag or fork bags.

Yes maybe the travers is a bit short then.
Back to the 1120 fork then!

The Prong is probably a bit short, it was designed around a 100mm fork.

I am just in the process of developing The Prong II which will be 120mm compatible (No delivery date yet as Covid has pushed things back a bit) but aiming for later this/early next year.

Is this the right thread to ask what people are doing for 29+ tyres at the moment? Is it a bit of a dying breed?

I plumped first a Kinesis fork for my Stooge, mainly because the A-C and trail matched the Stooge spec. I’ve no complaints.

From what I remember the Selcof was longer and the Exotic wouldn’t take a 3in tyre.

I found a couple of branded Chinese options (Flyxii and BXT) I’d have taken a punt on but neither had the right geo for me.

I've been running Hylix carbon forks on my Krampus for a few years now. Well and truly hammered them and they're flawless. And £90.
