Whilst it’s impressive that the riders are actually racing with the loads they are carrying, in the greater scheme of things they aren’t carrying the same weight as the average German cycle tourist

Seriously though the loads don’t look that great. Compared to some expedition loads they are comparatively light weight.
Just look at what Alpinium carries at times.
My own load on my African and Asian trips topped 40kg at times when food and water were added for isolated desert crossings.
There's bikes arrive at the WRT that probably weigh more but I'm wondering whether it's perhaps the choice of bke that will lead to problems?

Absolutely. And it would seem choice of rack.
I’d be on something a bit more substantial that won’t be flexing about like wet spaghetti under the extra load.

No doubt the context is missing to this photo but it appears to show the leader setting out from a pub.

I'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt, but wasn't the plan to avoid these places? If no one is buying anything on route, surely the unwritten other side of that rule is don't go mooching about pub gardens?

I believe they are all not allowed. Only public water taps that are available to all riders are OK.
No use of public toilets allowed.

I'm now on board with those thinking the rules are silly.

Looks like Mr Ibbett has taken the lead, or Mr Youngs batts have died in his Spot?

Yet Young has further distance from start than Ibbett?

I wondered if he'd ridden to the start and included that mileage?

Surely they are going to need more that 14,000 Calories to complete the ride ?

According to Strava, I burned 15,000 Calories in the 25 hours riding on the YD 300 last weekend.

What happens if/when they run out of their food stock ? - Do they have to bail ?

Strava wildy over estimates calorie burn if you do not use a power meter

I haven't seen the video and am not following any of the 'action' besides reading here, but from above post I gather it's 2 x 14,000 kcal which have been discussed.
Since I received a "Hey man, you should come ride GBDURO 2020... it'll be a no-fly ride..." from M. from the Racing Collective, I did a little research and found the route to be easy. Given this and the 2000 km and very little climbing, 28,000 kcal seems about right.

"But after a tough night getting caught in a thunderstorm then suffering the shivery, vomity after effects today, he's been forced to call it a day"

Ah I see. I thought the weather must have been pretty bad up on the moors. It's been very windy, and pretty wet here in the north east particularly yesterday, and this morning. I thought these guys would be well prepared for that, but I guess they're running quite light on kit with carrying all the food. Did no-one learn anything from last year's HT550?

I don't know the full route, but know all of Wales and "easy" is not a word I'd use to describe it!

27 000 m/ 90,000 ft of climbing and 1200 miles/2000KM

I dont reckon many will be saying easy to that route either

I think thats four riders out with gastrointestinal problems. Coincidence, or the need to find/filter water?

Too much reliance on energy gels?

I don't think any of them will be relying on energy gels. They might have some for emergencies, but its not feasible to rely on them for multi-day rides.

Almost certainly water related.

Surely, in this day and age there should be absolutely no need for anyone to make themselves ill through bad water? Filters are cheap and light and they will all remove the nasties that'll make you sick :???:
