What's it worth???

Post by gairym »

I'm gonna start this off with a question of my own but maybe, if folk fancy it, this could be a thread for anyone who'd like to know how much to put something up for sale for?

So.....

I need to get rid of a bike and despite abso-bloody-lutely loving this bike I am thinking of selling my Velo Orange 'Piolet'.

But how much is it worth?

Frame/forks: Velo Orange 'Piolet' (large, purple)
Wheels: Hope 'XC' (29")
Tyres: WTB 'Ranger' (2.4" with tan walls)
Drivetrain: SRAM 'Eagle GX' (1*12, 32t front, 10-50t rear)
Cranks: SRAM 'Eagle GX'
Pedals: none
Brakes: TRP 'Spyres'
Bars: Salsa 'Woodchipper'
Saddle: Brooks 'B17 narrow, Imperial, honey) - brand new with only one test ride which confirmed it's not for me.
Stem: 'something'
Headset: Hope
Bottom bracket: Hope (ceramic)

All in very good condition. Normal signs of a year and a half of (light) use with no noteworthy damage or wear (1200km).

Well??? How much should I put it for sale for???

Oh £25? PayPal?
Sadly probably less than you’d think, sad as it you often get a better return by splitting.

Yeah, I fear you're correct.

But I'm not giving up on the dream of selling it whole yet.....

I really like that, maybe worth more to keep it?

I sell a few bikes / frames as I change stuff a lot. My guess in good condition is between 30 and 60% of its original value depending on how high the original value (the higher the value, the lower the % due to perceived warranty risk), desirability and age (matching 'current' standards comes in here)

So... really rough guess

Frame and fork, £700
Wheels, £400
drive, £200
cranks, £100
Brakes, £125
Finishing, £300
Total £1825

Not too old, nice condition, still the current frame but is QR (I know they're fine, but I don't make the rules), adaptable wheels, slightly odd shifter solution

I reckon go in at 50% to make the sale

£912.50 (if I am remotely accurate on my guesswork above)

Probably less than you want to sell it for. But, thats how I work out what to sell stuff for. If you want it to go quicker, then less.

I've no idea but Dave's theory doesn't sound bad. The main thing is that it's not a medium thankfully

Agree, Dave's rough calc seems ballpark. The shifter thing will put a lot of people off IMO. Not for any good reason, just that it's quirky and out of the ordinary.

It's gorgeous and I would love it but seems too close to the Gryphon. Plus maybe a touch big.

No point saying the same thing twice  Plus you are of course a god amongst men and anyone disagreeing with you should tremble in their boots, or something

Thanks all,

Dave, that all sounds reasonable enough.

I really, REALLY don't want to sell it but Mrs Gairy is being a real stick in the mud about this one.

Basically each time I ride either the Piolet or the Escapade I decide I'll definitely sell the other one.

It's very nice.....and the suggested value looks reasonable to me.

I'd normally be interested but it's a little too similar to the Pipedream ALICE (don't google it!) I'm building up.

Good luck with the decision making!

When I was looking for a Sirius frame I had a saved search on eBay for 'pipedream' but hadn't made the category 'cycling' so some interesting stuff used to appear

My LBS had totally sold all of their showroom stock of bikes, building up a bit now...

They reckon it was due to the lockdown and people’s habits changing, so a massive demand for bikes.

This had a knock on effect on second hand bikes too.... a huge demand.

So Gairy advertise it as high as you think is a go’er and see what happens

In that case I’d suggest that perhaps you don’t sell it. Marriage is an ongoing series of compromises, if you go too far you risk harbouring resentment.
I sold much of my music equipment and basses during a period of our marriage when I needed to take extended leave while my wife looked after ailing parents. I brought bicycles for my wife and kids while I walked.
I’d have a chat with the mrs, unless you need to sell it to feed your family or keep a roof over your head.
bikes and instruments are personal, a hard thing to understand, easy to dismiss if you’re not inclined.
