Just a request from someone who's relatively new to the forum ( and a bit dyslexic) . Would you please use the full title of the route/race/meet in the thread subject line. WRT,HTR,CL300,HTTS etc are sometimes impenetrable.

Fair point about the occasional impenetrability, although it can be a jolly game to work them out . Funnily enough if someone wrote 'Welsh Ride Thing', these days I'd probably wonder what on earth they were on about . 'WRT' seems to have taken over in its own right.

No idea what the other three are 'cos I don't "do" named routes myself. Best ask the experts .

Anyway, welcome aboard. I'll try to remember but I don't post much these days.

A bit of a decode then

WRT - Welsh Ride Thing - the social ride that started this whole forum / site etc etc. Normally Mayday bank holiday unless we get corona'd

HT550 - Highland Trail 550 (550 miles) - The UK's biggest and most notorious bikepacking race

CL300 - Cairngorms Loop (300km) - it's actually a double loop,

TD - Tour Divide - biggest off road race in the US

RTTS - Run To The Sun - a bit informal ride through the night on the summer solstice. Normally has a couple of groups in different parts of the country

Not sure what else we have that gets abbreviated regularly.

And welcome anyway.

That's a good point, as we're all so used to talking about them we forget that not everyone reading is familiar with the shorthand. Not helped by the similarity of some and also that for some events there can be more than one

The Highland Trail 550 (which was 'only' 430 originally) is referred to as the HTR (Highland Trail Race) and the HT550. It's also a shame that there's not a standard unit of measurements to help with the deciphering.

The B150 (Braughton 150) is in miles and the BB300 (Bearbones 300) is in Km, From the initials it looks like the BB300 will be twice as hard as the B150... where in reality in the storm of 2018 the BB300 was about 4 times as hard as a B150

It's also a shame that there's not a standard unit of measurements to help with the deciphering.

I've always used kilometres when discussing off-road activities (hiking, cycling, paddling, running), mostly because I use OS maps. I'll occasionally switch into miles for road trips, just because signposts are in miles.

Distance units are a bit of an odd one, I suppose it's whatever's logically nearest: YD300 (Yorkshire Dales 300) is in Km, would be a bit odd being the YD186 Sometimes the person who came up with the route prefers miles to kilometres or vice versa. Doesn't help when this year's YD200 (road) is in miles where the previous editions(MTB) have been in km.

Other abbreviations:

PBW = Pennine Bridleway
CL = Cairngorm Loop
TCW = Trans Cambrian Way
RTTS = Ride To The Sun (a summer solstice overnight ride)

Rarer:

LL = Lakeland Loop

Plenty of other acronyms to confuse as well:

LNT - Leave No Trace
ALLE - Arrive Late Leave Early
TSNMCF - Thou Shalt Not Make Camp Fires

Stu might even send you a nice sticker to help you remember that one. If you haven't looked apprehensively at the sticker at least once during your ride then, yes, you're being soft .
