Summat tells me the end of the BB pole isn't designed for flimsy tarp designs (although I have no clue if it is flimsy... I definitely know my knowhow is)...
Stick something over the end - rubber off a walking stick, half a rubber ball or just your glove.

 now I know where I bought it from and why. Thanks Stu. Whats a cheap method of erecting the other end without too much weight penalty or investment...

You can, of course, use a wheel (or even your bike handlebars) in place of that smaller pole.

Or a stick. Plentiful, sustainable.

It'll never catch on 🤔

Yeah, I've used sticks but "plentiful" isn't guaranteed

Bike handlebars are adequate, effectively a 700mm "pole", with the wheel between bar and tarp it takes a surprising amount of force to lift the bike, in fact I've yet to have it move.
