Fat wheel, Surly Rabbit hole rim

Post by robbie »

Guy's I got this wheel with a bike I just bought. Its a surly rabbit hole rim with halo hub, fitted with a maxis chronicle 29 x 3" tyre, So question is it a decent rim, Can I make it tubeless? the tyre seems just on the tight side for fork, there is clearance but not much,
Can anyone recomend a slightly smaller tyre to fit say a 2.8?
Not sure if I will keep hold of it as seems a bit overkill for what I'm going to be doing.
Never used anything this size before so not clued up on tyres and rims etc
Cheers

Yes, they're a good rim and will work tubeless.

With a bit of persuasion..... Ghetto split tube is the easiest way, taping can be tricky due to the holes but people have managed it. Chronicles are actually good tyres - a nice compromise between weight and toughness with pretty good grip in a range of conditions.

Chronicle rider here. Very good in most conditions. Good on the road too.

I’ve been using a Rabbit Hole & Chronicle set up tubeless without issue for a number of years.

I’m considering a Bontrager XR4 for the autumn/winter though.

A Surly rim strip over the holes, then wide gorilla tape over that worked for me. It needs to be the wide tape as it needs to cover the whole width of the rim in one pass.
