New sleeping mat required

Post by Specialist Hoprocker »

My Alpkit Lumo appears to be leaking from several spots and my attempts to fix it have failed.

My lovely old Thermarest is too big and heavy to get on the bike.

I thought I'd cracked it when I found a Synmat Lite 5 on a website for £45 but having waited a fortnight, the website tell me they've been discontinued I can't have one.

So what do I get? Ideally it would be light, slightly insulated, pack smallish, and be under £50…

Probably searching for the impossible again!

It’s a bit pricier but not too bad

I'll keep my eye on this thread as I'm also in the market for a new mat getting a little fed up of falling off my Numo now tbh  Anyone have any experiences with Dumo or Cloud Base from Alpkit ?

My mate has a Cloud Base and I'd consider one but they're out of stock ☹️

I bought an Exped DownMat Lite 5 based on recommendations from on here. Brilliant, but a touch more than £50...

The Robens Vapour looks very similar to the cloudburst.

I think all mats of that ilk are really Jon. Getting something with a reasonable R value for less than £50 that isn't self-inflating will take a bit of doing.

I just bought my daughter (and probably will pinch it at some point) the "amusingly named" semi from planet X for £15. Seems pretty comfy and compact/light considering that it has foam inside. They also do a full length one (morning glory) and a purely air one (diamond cutter) too.

^ I thought you were joking there but they are for real.

Have P-X been reading too much Viz or something?

There is of course huge scope for naming other outdoor products in a similar vein...........

I'll need one for my July BAM so I've decided I can't afford an insulated one at the mo and have given my money to Mountain Warehouse. They've got an outlet near me so I can avoid postage costs and if/when it fails I can take it back!

https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/compa ... aspx/blue/

When it gets chilly, I'll man up and take the Thermarest until I'm feeling flush again!

Thanks for the advice all. If anyone has any other good ideas or spare mats for sale post up as I can always cancel the order.

The actual thickness is much less important than the R value. Higher the number, the warmer the mat. A simple air mat like the Numo is pretty much 0, for year round use I tend to look at something 4 or above*

*That's US figures, if you're looking at mats from Exped, Thermarest, BA etc then they'll generally all use the same system so just compare numbers.

good explanation here - worth scrolling to bottom first for the nicer sea to summit graphic then read
https://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk ... ained-i206

NB US R is not SI as they like imperial units so make sure you are comparing US with US and SI with SI as US is x 5 of SI for the same temp rating.
