Mountain navigation

Post by whitestone »

I know Stu has written a couple of pieces on his blog about maps and navigation but I've just come across an online copy of Martin Bagness' "Mountain Navigation" which is standard fare for fell runners. Intro here: https://fellrunner.org.uk/documents/mou ... _intro.pdf and booklet itself here https://fellrunner.org.uk/documents/mou ... gation.pdf

Obviously aimed at runners, it first appeared when mountain marathons became popular in the 1980s, so some techniques such as pacing aren't that relevant to bikers.

It's been arranged to be free as part of the FRA navigation courses - only a very recent agreement. It's an excellent read.

FWIW, I'm one of the two course directors for the nav. weekends - worth attending. Though September is likely to be cancelled.
