Geometry mainly. Looks more similar to a flat bar frame than something like a Fargo or Gryphon.

Also max 29er is 2.1” which is disappointing given this is basically the ECR replacement.

Is this the mythical Ghost Grappler?
It appears to be out… https://surlybikes.com/bikes/ghost_grappler
Its very long for a dropped bar bike - 640 ETT for my size, more than the ICT.....
And only clearance for 29x2.1....
Nice long head tube though.

Obviously seen the criticism on here and scrapped the whole production run.

It’s official now

https://surlybikes.com/index.php/bikes

Really interesting bike but the low 29” tyre clearance is a killer for me.

Stanton have just released a new Ti gravel bike.

Apparently it's "bike packing compatible", so that's alright then

I assume if it isn't, then it turns into a pumpkin if left out overnight?

I'm curious now as to what bike wouldn't be bike packing compatible since the media consider it to be synonymous with touring.

Hmm not sure I get the ‘Ghost Grappler’ Surly have made some interestingly different bikes, I’ve owned a Bigdummy and an ECR. Both were different to much else and worked well for their intended purpose because of it. This looks like a lot of trendy ideas chucked into a tumbola and picked at random. Ok I like the tall head tube, but it’s tall because of the non suspension corrected front end. So your stuck ridged despite a long top tube which might make it rowdy enough to warrant a suspension fork, oh and it’s a straight steerer tube in 2022? Not many options if you want to change the fork.
Fatties fit fine? Err 2.1 in 29 inch is not really generous, granted you can fit 2.8 in 650b but my Fargo came with that setup, it felt wrong on a drop bar bike.
I do however like the bottle mount on the dropouts, always nice the have extra options.
Of course I’m coming from the perspective of a long term Fargo owner, I still feel it’s my perfect bike so obviously anything different is rubbish :-bd
We’re all individuals, except me.

I woke up this morning but I’m still in the dark

i am a big fan of surly bikes. owned nearly a dozen over the years. but i cant see what this bike is designed for.
of all the surly bikes i have had, the ECR covers everything you would need. pop a pair of wide drops and some barcons on a ECR and it will do anything this new thing is designed for.

I wonder whether we're perhaps coming at the new Surly from the wrong (mountain bike) direction and can't help but wonder if it might not look like a completely different prospect if coming up the road / gravel path?

My view on the GG after sitting on one, is why not just buy a krampus or KM and run drops with a load of spacers? The geometry is almost identical, the GG just has a much bigger front triangle.

You get much better tyre clearances and a suspension corrected fork.

The reach is crazy long for a drop bar, as you say may as well just stick drops on a karate monkey

If there is a fuel crisis then electric bikes could be the new dragsters.
