BB gilet question.

I'm just finalising the last few bits before opening orders for jerseys and wanted to know people's preference on gilets. The question is, vented (mesh) back or solid? All previous versions have featured a soild back but I recall some asking for a vented version.

I quite like my one - I'd say its fairly windproof and does provide an insulation layer so does what I want. I kind of think if you need vents in it then you just take it off.... my view, others may differ

I have both types in my wardrobe.

Mesh back works well on the road bike. I'm not wearing a pack and unlikely to get a wet streak off the rear wheel. If it's very wet I'll likely hava a waterproof jacket on anyway.

Solid back works well on the MTB. I'm probably wearing a pack and more likely to get a wet streak off the rear wheel. Even when it's not raining the trails retain surface water and mud longer than tarmac. I choose not to wear a waterproof jacket if it's not actually raining.

I have a Polaris gilet which is waterproof, has a solid bit up the middle of the back and mesh panels at each side. I can only conclude it was designed by someone who actually rides bikes in sub standard conditions.

Same here. Mesh is cooler than the solid back.

But in sub standard conditions I generally have a mudguard on.... not cool I know

Dunno what I'm talking about here as usual but wouldn't a mesh back compromise all that lovely artwork? I'd rather be able to see every nuance in all its glory.

I have one of the green ones as well and bought it for mostly mountain biking. If I was going to get another one I'd prefer a mesh back as I'd probably be using more on my gravel bike. To be honest though I was planning to go for short and long sleeved road tops and a long sleeved baggy top, not sure if I can justify another gilet, depends on pricing I suppose.

How about a half mesh back with a semi-windproof front, removable quilted lining with detachable sleeves, optional hood with quilted, windproof and waterproof variants. A zipped breast pocket is a must have too.
