OT: broken nut extraction tool?

Post by redefined_cycles »

I did it. Whilst putting new wing mirrors on the good old 'Chity bang' as it won't pass next MOT for one of em, I overtorqued  and snapped a bolt...

That one in there Image

If you look to its right and above, its brothers/sisters sit happily and correctly torqued. Need to fetch it out but the diameter of the actual thready bit is only 6 or 7mm at most. Need something pretty specific that won't screw it over more. Any suggestions (probably something from screwfix)...

probably a left handed drill bit i reckon.
using a L/H drill to drill the pilot size for a bolt extractor could well spin it out.
if it doesn't a bolt extractor should.

local tool specialist might help with the left handed drill as it doesn't look like screwfix do them.

these sort of things:

Thanks Andy... Will have a watch now.. My actual thread diameter of whats snapped in there is 4.5mm...

This kit having a 3mm extractor. Seems fiddly but with a good drillbit. It should do it right!

if you take the mirror off will you be left with a stub to remove with mole grips?

It also shouldn't be that tight to remove as its not seized in and isn't under load anymore

Now then... after exploring the options and watching that vid as well as trying to get to back end of the bolt (using the mirror I'd taken off to explore), and the fact that the thread width is only 4.5mm and the thinnest extractor available is 3mm and the Milwaukee precision 3mm drillbit is only available tomorrow. I've decided to stop whilst I'm ahead as it feels solid enoigh with the 2 screws that are already in and thankfully not broken...

Quit whilst ahead I think they say :-bd as I'm definitely just gonna knacker the thread hole without much good coming out of it (probably)...

Thanks
