Great idea!

We are close to Lothersdale which is to the SW of Skipton if anyone wants to come up with some Grid Refs for us. Don't know of any dubious spots (ahem) other than Keighley which is best avoided anyway

Any others want to "team up" picking grid refs then please do so.

This afternoon I'm going to send Reg a screen grab Google map with no go areas such as city centre, not too nice estates, Safari park, and wildlife areas that he would know about, plus a 15km circle around my house for him to
have a look at Google and simply put 10 dots on it and send it back to me.

Sounds amusing and I could drag my son it to this, but as i'm a bit cerebrally challenged could some one make sense of how it will work for me?

Do I set off for my daily hour (Scotland) via some checkpoints (some one gives me them based on my adress; Scalloway, Shetland Isles) in the local area Friday to return and camp in a corner of the garden Saturday night and repeat the other days, but camp in a different corner of the garden?

Do I need to dig a cat hole/bucket (may need a screen for the neighbours) or can I use 'the facilities'?

Any other rules re support/food for the garden

Go on then  . I'll save my earlier GR's cos will probably still need 'em in June!

Bob, do you fancy making up a little circular trio to make it a bit more interesting? I do John's, you knock me a few up, and John does yours/Cath's? Or Cath could of course have a separate set as a foursome  .

I'm assuming we really ought to be keeping the rides down to 59 minutes each if we are sticking to the 'letter of the law' about "run for half an hour, walk for an hour, or cycle for an amount in between"..... that would also limit the selection and add more amusement perhaps. Legal RoWs only too of course ;).

I'm going to need 3 rides as I'm entering the full WRT.

If you're on for that Bob I can PM you my postcode?

If you were on the usual WRT you'd be allowed pubs and shops, I'd treat any local building that may or may not be your house in the same way. (There probably needs to be a rule preventing getting so well-acquainted with the "staff" that you're allowed to stay in the "pub" all night.)

Reckon easiest way is just assume it's normal WRT 'Rules' - only use services open-to-all ('open' = challenging!) with Stu's temporary addition of 'own home/garden/loo', no dumps (food, not the other sort!!), no paid camps, self-rescue etc.

Don't see why you can't use same garden spot twice.

Think I'm going to request Bob to give me 12 GR's within a four/five mile radius of my house and split them across the three separate days.

I'd love to bivvy outside the boundary of my home, nearby, but sadly don't reckon we're allowed that yet?

Might be tricky. we do have 2 village shops that are open, so that's fine, but no public loos or water supplies really other than my house. I could put a bucket in the shed. I could sleep in the 'shed' as a bothy one night!

Yes I'm 'shedding' for one night. On the ride you can still take your trowel and water-filter and use open shops.....

Bucket 'facilities' overnight is interesting ;)

Not allowed here, though likely no one would know, but given my job if I was spotted it could be awkward and embarrassing. Doesn't come inside the 'one daily exercise for an hour guidance' we have, staying outside your home for a weekend does it?

OK, so you can maybe use the same garden spot twice, but you have to decamp and take it with you. :-bd
Though I couldn't realistically carry the shed with me  So restrict that to once.

No problem Reg, just the town/village name will do, don't have to be that accurate unless of course you live on the edge of Birmingham in which case a ten mile radius from the centre of same wouldn't be that pleasant

The "one hour" thing was an off the cuff remark by Gove, there's no law, rule or regulation backing that up but the usual Rule 1 applies: "Don't be a dick!"

Shed? I can only dream of a shed. When I were a lad we had to make do ...

SHUT UP!

Yeh, but in Scotland it is actually ministerial guidance on Scot Gov. In Wales it is in the legislation too. But yeh, rule 1 :-bd

ZE1 OTT for me if anyone wants to furnish me with some nearby grids, though cycling might be a bit limited, so I'm happy to walk...

Excellent Bob, cheers!

OK, say a radius of about 6/7 miles centred on Leighton Buzzard High Street, which would actually include quite a lot of variety in all directions. I rather like the very restricted range as it forces a different view of things. As mentioned I'd do three separate rides, maybe covering a 120 degree slice each, maybe not, dunno . Don't want to put any restrictions on you other than 'RoW' of course - there's surprising number of BW's for example round here.

Marvellous! Hope you don't mind JC doing yours - who knows what you'll get  .

I reckon S8 7BD with a radius of 5 miles should be good for me if anyone fancies sending me on a domesticated-goose-chase. Happy to use the lockdown rules of "on foot" to open up footpaths...

Right you all, just back in from my ride, and I've had a think.........

Rule 1 - Don't be a dick, ride solo (or with members of your family who live under the same roof) and abide by the rules of Social Distancing

Rule 2 - there are no other rules

Guidlines
Sheds garages and out houses can be classed as bothies where you can stash your overnight gear.
Sleep only on ground that you own
You can't sleep in your house, but you can cook, eat, socialise and watch TV (I'm not missing Gogglebox on Friday for any of you)

Find someone who you are happy to swap addresses with, Reg and Bob are in our little gang

1) Go to Google maps (I'll use where I used to live in Stafford as an example)
2) Right click above your house/street - you should see this
Image
Click measure distance and draw a line to the boundary or where you want to keep inside - Don't be pushed to do more than you want to do. (I'm setting my limit to 15km for Reg)

Take a screen grab (press the Ctrl and PrtSc) buttons togethes
and take this picture
Image

To your photo editing software, if you don't have any, the easiest and quickest that I've found is a free download called Paint.net (be careful not to click on the many confusing adverts on the link)

Add a circle raduis where you don't want to travel over the boudnary of and highlight areas you don't want dot's to go in like this one below
Then sent that map to the person who's doing your Grid Refs
Image

The other person now had your map and they can use Grid Refs or simply a dot and a description on your map using Google and street view, put in 10 dots, re save it then send it back to you. Something like this

Image
Please note, this is just an example that I've thrown togehter quickly to show you as this is very much the 11th hour

So Reg send me your map and I'll give you the spots.

Please note you will need the other persons email address, so please ask for these via private massage on here

Is that clear?

Another thought.
When sending over your map to your opposite number.
There's no reason why you can't include the link to the Google Street view shot so they know what to look for.
