Broken road riders, assistance please

Post by FLV »

Im currently suffering from slipping seatpost.

I have a new ritchey wcs al post, measures 31.4 in the new BR frame which measures 31.8

Ive tried a chromag QR and the standard sonder bolt up clamp it came with.

I can also try a shim and a 27.2 race face post which is next.

Any issues from users? What post you got and what clamp? How many grunts worth do you need to tighten it?

Thanks folks
Dave

Ive tried some fenwicks grip compound too. For both cases.

Is the post marked as 31.4 or did you measure it as that?

If it's a 31.4 post then it the wrong size for the frame.

The almost endless sizes of posts available is one of the more annoying things of bike standards. I think my Identiti frame has a size that only Identiti make

Tried the old cut-up-coke-can shim trick Dave?

Measured, marked 31.6.

Coke can, not yet. Id hoped not to resort to that but it remains an option of course. Been a very long time since i had to so.

I had this. Bought a hope seatclamp. Also coated the seatpost in dirt.

Ill try some dirt then. I'd avoided hope seatclamps as i thought they had aluminium bolts.

Only thing that has worked for me is a FSA carbon seat post and carbon paste.

I have a dropper that i used when i first got the frame a few weeks ago. That slipped too, just not as much. But i took it out to fit a standard post so my seat pack would fit (before the V)
Keen to solve it now

I'm sure there's probably a good reason but, if it was new etc etc, have you considered contacting Alpkit about replacement or possible remedy?

I had a vaguely similar issue with a Titus Fireline. Even clamped up to hold the post at height you could "waggle" it and feel a knocking. Took it back and got a straight swap for a second frame that didn't show the same symptoms and has been fine since.

Yes, I have contacted Alpkit to ask what the spec/tol is for the seat tube. Everything is new new and less than 2 months old.

I use a 27.2 seatpost and aluminium cane creek shim (31.6 - 27.2) on my BR. No issues and the thinner post adds to comfort.

On shims, I tried the USE plastic ones in the past found they allowed too much flex between post and seattube.

My USE one is aluminium, with a Aluminium raceface seatpost, thats the worst slip of all.

Odd then. Mine is Thomson post and Salsa liplock clamp, which I use on all bikes. No issues at all in 18 months. I am 95kgs as well so by no means light!

If you are accurately measuring the post as 31.4 and the frame is for 31.6 then the post you've got is clearly wrong. In which case Alpkit will take it back. Load of cheap 31.6 posts around without having to resort to pastes, fancy seatclamps or carbon posts.
