£1200 for frame and fork?!

Can get a fully built Trek Checkpoint at that price and then convert it over as it’s SS compatible with its stranglehold (?) dropouts

It needed to be half or a third of that to be cheap?

You've got to remember the Salsa website is targeted at a US audience and ignore the exchange rate/tax/import etc.. They list the full bike for 1500USD and frameset for 1099USD puts pretty much between the old 4310 All City Nature Boy and new Nature Boy A.C.E, which seem like the closest comparison in the QBP range.

Same applies to the Bridge Club - in the US it's great value, over here, it doesn't seem as good value compared to offerings from Planet X, Genesis etc. I've seen a write up about the difference in costs somewhere but can't find it at the moment.

My el mariachi F+F* cost me £500ish

My Mukluk cost half that but should have cost ~£500.

*admittedly with a steel fork but still...

It was only a sniff more for my Pinnacle Arkose D3 full bike with rather decent kit on it.

i remember when SS were your parts bin bike and whilst i adore mine and ride it often £1200 for a frame and fork combo that is not titanium is absurd - and if its titanium its still absurd

I did anticipate a response along the lines of 'f*ck me, how much?". I don't know if I'm out of touch with stuff or not (surely if you are then you're not aware of it anyway) but it does seem like a lot if money with very little in the way of usp aside from the badge. Are Salsa putting themselves beyond the reach (and if so, that probably also means interest) of the average rider?

I built my first singlespeed for £300, iirc, using second hand parts, based on a Singular Swift. Granted, I have a much more expensive SS now, but those where the days

Indeed. I built up a singlespeed from an old On-One frame. It would have cost me about £20 for the SS kit but I had to replace the rear wheel as that had an Alfine hub and the front wheel was a dynamo hub that had been moved to my commuter so all up it ended up costing about £120 with the extra £100 being wheels and tyres.

I did the Dirty Reiver on it so it can't have been that bad

That's a hilarious price. I could take a pretty close guess what that costs out the factory door. I tend not to comment on some of the crazy markups I see on things but that's just going a bit far.

FWIW I'm certainly not in the market for a £1200 single speed frameset but playing Devil's advocate here regarding some points made:

1. Not sure Salsa have ever been that obtainable or a value option

2. Comparing a brand new bike to what you can build a second hand bike for is moving the goal posts a bit

3. The trek with SS dropouts is £1700 but is available as a frameset for £800

4. Would a £1200 Ti frame come with a fancy carbon fork or anything other than plain gauge pipe that probably doesn't have the mythical zing?

5. Gold plate. Err, no defending that!

6. Their pricing has always been weird. My Fargo had an rrp of £1300 and my Spearfish £2200. Definitely not an £900 of value between the two, even taking their different frame designs into account.

A quick search around the usual suspects and Ribble do an aluminium gravel bike frame with carbon fork for £600. About 2kg for the F&F. Their "gravel" build is £1300.

the camino ti is about that price for as is the ribble offering - both come with a carbon fork

Walty - consderably lower than those prices but no fork - £6-800 inc taxes depending on type for off the shelf no idea for bespoke

As I own two Salsas I'm obviously a fan. I wouldn't have been suprised by the price but their website says, and this is copied and pasted directly,

An inexpensive single speed gravel bike, made of metal, that could be used for events when conditions are truly horrible, or for wet weather training, so that riders don’t need to trash the bikes they’ve invested so much in. It would also serve dedicated single speeders.”

It's a good job the solution wasn't a high end single speed as the price world have been eye-watering
