Jenn Ride 2020

Post by JohnClimber »

Rich's first edition of this years #JennRide route

https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/j ... -edition-1

I'll be on the bike and pack raft again if anyone fancies a weekend ride and paddle without the stress of the full route above

That's a lot of climbing in 100 miles :o I'd better lower the ratio on the singlespeed.

Morning all. My knowledge of the Lakes is minimal, so can anyone tell me which the unmissable bits are? Obviously it'll all be good but there must be some sections better than others

20km - 40km over Claife Heights and through Grizedale.
56km - 70km from Coniston over Walna Scar and round by Stephenson Ground to Satterthwaite
90km - 93km will have a bit of hike-a-bike
130km to the end is all good

Probably goes over Walna Scar "the wrong way" since it's a better descent W-E and it's likely to be a push for everyone at points. The descent to Satterthwaite is rocky and technical. The climb out of Eskdale at 90km starts off OK but soon becomes a push until you get into the forestry. Garburn Pass going W-E is tough but rideable to the top, then a rocky, rubble descent. The last bit over Green Quarter is good but I've not done between 153 & 156km which is said to be boggy.

Others may disagree Stu but if you didn't want to do the full thing you could chop out the bit between 50 and 100km and not miss too much. Some very good riding on the home stretch and you'll want a bit of juice left in the legs for Garburn Pass.

Rich usually puts on a shorter ride as well for those not wishing to commit to 100 miles in the Lakes. The shortcut between 50 & 100km would be about right for that. You could also drop straight down from Walna Scar at 62km then along the road up Dunnerdale to pick up the return route at Cockley Beck. The section from Seathwaite over to Eskdale and back is all road apart from the bit of hike-a-bike I mentioned. There's quite a few other shortcuts that you can take and people probably will on the weekend itself.

I've (mostly) every intention of doing the full loop but I do like an old fashioned explore too. I'll also be riding there and possibly home again so 'broken' won't be a good state to be in

People should be aiming to get to the Old Dungeon Ghyll 110 km lots of wild camping spots and the NT Campsite for those who fancy a sub standard/shower :-)
Lots of quite scenic road on the far western bit and the last leg from Sadgill is cruel but we have not done it before :-)

Looking forward to seeing you all earn that badge

Now that I'm potentially gonna be able to find a slot. Can I ask (probabyl a Q for Bob as it seems to be his local), how much of that route will have 'riding on the edge' kind of trails... I hate hieghts and the fear of em messes my mind. Happy going steep downhill though as thats less scary/disorientating... Thanks
