Interesting, I’ve looked at connecting the ridgeway and South Downs way but couldn’t really see any coherent options without lots of road.

Aye, spent lots of my youth ridding around the chalk,we ran panracer darts at 1.9” in a vain attempt to cut through and find some grip.

I'd forgotten about the Ridgeway, I must go back and finish that, my last attempt was Easter 2018 when you told me it would be too wet. I abandoned as I couldn't take the rain, cold and mud anymore... it made the 2019 BB300 seem pleasant by comparison

I'm looking forward to giving that a go. Out on the South Downs Way, round King Alfred, back along the Thames Path, then home down the BHF route. Should be fun!!

I love how hardcore you've got recently.

Does anyone have a GPX for the bit from the Southdowns Way up to the Northdowns Way or even where it leaves the SouthDowns way?
It looks like it's on the Devil Punchbowl has anyone tried this section is it a mud fest?

IT looks like it uses the shipwrights way on the Eastside north of the sdw.

Yep it all lines up nicely. Anybody know how it gets from Winchester-Salisbury?

Salisbury to the ridgeway looks to be via the Wiltshire cycleway.

Let me just get this right... so King Alfreds is comparable or takes in some of The Ridgeway which is in actual fact harder than the (whichever one) BB300...

I'm still stuck trying to finish an attempt at Peaks200... Two last year and gonna attempt another this fall*(GodWilling)...

*Is that Spring or Summer. If its Spring then yeah, gonna try it in Fall... not summer (whatever that translates to in US speak)... any, keep riding them rigs well and proper

The Ridgeway end-to-end (~150km) is a pleasant all-day ride in dry summer conditions but in the wet/winter a fair bit of it is just a hoof-churned, claggy slog - best avoided.

Having a look at this now, good work I'd mapped out some similar stuff past the western end of the Ridgeway but seeing how it links to the SDW is interesting. All I need to do is avoid Reading and route it back towards the Ridgeway eastern end and it'll be a nice weekender for the summer - easy access out of London as I live near the main line from Euston at the RW west end start point. Will post it up when done.

Interested in that Winchester is under 25 miles of peddling from my house (with a little help from Red Funnel) so I can join these routes without needing the car.

No Sean, you have to come via us and ride the ship wrights up to qecp first otherwise you won’t get tired!! Last time I visited your side the hovertravel staff insisted on hosing the bike down before they would put it in the Hover’s (old ones) outside baskets. I could tell they they really wanted to hose me down too!

It’s interesting but Southern trains really don’t give a monkeys about you ruining their carriages with mud, but se trains do. I wonder what other operators are like.

I'd be interested in that too! For me I'd imagine I'd find a way to circumnavigate the stretch past Reading and on way back round hop off the loop at Goring/Streatley to home. A cool weekend circuit for sure

Yes Goring is a natural start+end point also.

It's the basis of a good loop. I've ridden Winchester-Reading-Chilterns a couple of times on a modified 3-Down audax ride and tbh soon after you go inside that London gravitational effect line of Basingstoke-Wokingham-Marlow-Beaconsfield it gets busy, unpleasant compared to the area further west. Worth finding a quieter way through that area.
