"Broke Down" Farm By Afon Hengwm

Post by Escape Goat »

I've ridden past this about 5 times this year - each and every time I wanted to know more about it. I was wondering if anyone knows the story of this place?

Also, when you've passed this (or maybe slightly before) to your right if you're heading SW along the reservoir, there is a shelter or hut in the distance, which I haven't got a picture of yet, but it is a decent distance away - does anyone know about this place too?

Many thanks :-bd

I can't help with your request but I was coincidently looking at this very track today trying to decide if suitable for a gravel bike route or not. Decided from the satellite pics that I didn't like the look of a winter crossing of Afon Hengwm so routed around the other side of Nant-y-Moch.

What is that track like, gravel road or grassy slog?

It was an outward bound centre.
I poked my head in a couple of years ago and it’s quite run down now.

@Neil
The track is rideable on a gravel bike but I wouldn’t say it’ll be enjoyable.

As Taylor says, it was an outdoor centre but hasn't been in regular use for a long time.

The building you mention on the other side is now restored and a residence - whether that's full time or holiday, I know not.

There's a bridge over the Afon Hengwm at about the point of the 'o' of Afon. The "interesting" crossing is the smaller stream that comes in from the bottom right of that shot - see last year's BB200 threads. The track north of the Hengwm is pretty rough, to the south there are some big puddles.

Cheers guys, been wondering for ages.

I've done that track on a gravel bike twice, but I've had 2 inch tyres....
