I would still argue that sleeping2-4 hours is still a strategy based on not sleeping.

I was pushing my bike in the snow, wondering if it was really happening, or whether it was a dream.

However, I never put myself in danger. I know that the only thing really important is to be able to recognize the exact moment when you can no longer fight against sleep. You have to be able to stop before you wake up in the ditch, or worse.

Uhm, 'will roadies spoil grave?' ... I doubt it but what I love is the irony that everyone seems to be trying to turn 'gravel' into mountainbiking. Bigger tyres, wider bars, suspension, droppers, etc

I think its an easier transition than to an actual proper MTB race/route where you will need far superior [ or different ] set of bike handling skils [and camping/survival]- for gravel you just need to tolerate the facts its not tarmac.
I am sure many ex pros will ride these events and rather quickly.

Perhaps because ‘gravel bikes’ are pretty crap off-road? I love mine, if I could only have one bike, it would be the keeper, but for any route >50% off-road, I would definitely use a proper MTB.
Interesting observation from ‘rigs of the AMR’, it appears most people took drop bar gravelish bikes, but most of the fastest riders used normal MTBs. Would be interested to here what those riding this year think about that.

Having ridden a different Atlas routes from Marrakesh last year, I wouldn’t mind giving this route a try, but probably not racing.

Cutthroat was at times brilliant, but overall, definitely not the right bike. Hardtail with flat bars would have been much better.

Given what Nigel and others have said, I'm intrigued to discover whether the event was in some way 'mis-sold' or have we now reached the point that unless explicity told otherwise, we naturally expect any event to be gravel biased?
