Tell me about plastic pedals

I'm intrigued about the concept of using plastic pedals in the winter.

Are they the ones with pins in or the basic commuter/hybrid type pedal?

I use ones with pins. I did have some DMR (V6?) but they didn't last long before the bearings failed. I've now a set of Nukeproof Neutron EVOs. This is for my fat bike.

Whether they make a difference, I don't know. It's not as if I'm wearing lightweight slippers! Usually in proper winter I'm wearing winter mountaineering boots so there's probably not much difference between metal and plastic. Might be different if you are riding UK winter temps and using something like 5:10s

Time do plastic SPD pedals - dont know about shimano

Cant say i have noticed any difference between bikes and pedals but metal must be colder than plastic - it it enough to make a difference to us - doubt it personally but |i defer to those who ride in more wintry conditions than northern England offers

Last 2 winters on the 500km road rides. In pretty much 0 degrees or close to it. Used my DMR v12 (metal) with my Five10 guide tennie goretex boots. Didn't say I missed or wished for plastic but then again I didn't have metal spd/cleats stuck to my shoes...

destroyed 2 pairs of plastic pedals pretty quickly.
1 pair deformed around the hole the axle goes into. they were nukeproof.
the other pair split along the center line like the axle had filleted the plastic. they were funn

I use Nukeproof Electrons/Protons. Plastic platform, metal pins. That opens up my choice of footwear to something that has a decent sole, is waterproof and, potentially, insulated.

Oh - and pins help with grip if you end up with a snowy hike-a-bike and your soles are covered in frozen snow.

Looks like I'll be trying out some Nukeproof Electron Evo's then.

Thanks for the replies!

I went for RaceFace Chesters as my plastic pedals. Got me round the Cairngorms Loop, HT550 and many other big rides without issue. I definitely think that SPD cleats are a factor in getting cold feet when I do big winter road rides, though I stick with them on road.
