What spare clothes would you take on a week / two week trip?

Post by Asposium »

Was chatting with someone and they were shocked (horrified is likely closer to the truth) how little spare clothing I take on multi week trips; so, got me wondering, what spare clothes do you lot take on a week / two week trip.

For the discussion, spare is any item that has more than one of.

I generally have....
Second pair of shorts
Second pair of socks (sometimes a third)
Underwear (usually for travelling to /from start of getting a train /plane)

Isn't the idea to have just the one spare sock - rotating each sock continuously through this sequence each day: left foot, right foot, wash/dry, repeat....

Pair of socks
Pair of gloves - usually with different padding to alleviate any potential pressure points.

Spare socks shorts and top. Don't like putting on wet kit first thing in the morning . So I get to delay this by a day.

We travel a little differently to most of you I think, as we do stop to smell the flowers a lot along the way. For anything longer than three days we would take our 'civilian clothing' bundle with us - thin hiking trousers (that zip off into shorts), a thin shirt + underwear. We don't carry a jumper - we just use our down jackets that go with us anyway for that. We also carry pyjamas - a merino long sleeved top and leggings that can be worn as emergency civvies or to boost up our civvy gear in colder weather.

This all goes into a 2l drybag (each) with room to spare. Shoe-wise we have our bike shoes or crocs if it is hot. We wash our cycling kit after 3 days riding if at all possible. This means we have our civvies we can put on while washing our bike gear. When we stayed with Warm Showers hosts on our last trip it was nice to be able to put our civvies on after a shower in the evening and not have to sit around in smelly bike kit, same goes for a hostel.

If we are just wild camping or staying in bothies for a night or three we would just take one set of cycling gear + pjs and dry socks.

^ technically taking lots of clothes doesn’t come under “spare clothing”, that comes under TLS.

I also carry a pair of leggings in which to sleep, but only one pair, so doesn’t count for this discussion.

My north face cycling trousers are good for bike, off-bike, and travelling; again, only one pair, so don’t count for this discussion. :-bd

It depends on many factors but may take some Rohan trews for evenings and spare socks and one pair of underwear. Maybe a Tee, down jacket and second pair of cycling shorts as well. If nice weather cycling shorts dry on the bike during day.

If I'm touring I'll chuck a pair of lightweight trousers in the bag for going to pubs / orchestra recitals an that. I carry a merino top and bottoms or boxers for pjs so this makes for a reasonably respectable set of clothes to wear. With care these will remain respectable for a week or so
