As per the title, the new Kona 'Unit X' looks very bikepacking friendly and not too spendy to boot

Lovely looking bike (though not the finish/colour I'd have chosen).
I'm really enjoying the resurrection of the 29+ platform as I think it was massively overlooked last time round and as long as it'll stretch to 2.8" then I'd be happy.
I like that - ticks a lot of boxes for me - steel, rigid, semi-fat, I'm currently in the process of re-consolidating my bikes and want to add something like this or a Krampus to it
this did made me reminisce about my old mate Moggy's Super Burner back in early 1980's like one below...oh those heady days of endless summer holidays dicking about on BMXs

Do you mean towards the seat post?
The sliding drop out is in a middle position. Given that usually CS lengths are measured from the middle position, the bike will still feel nimble in turns when slided all the way back to give more clearance.

The sliding drop out is in a middle position. Given that usually CS lengths are measured from the middle position, the bike will still feel nimble in turns when slided all the way back to give more clearance.
Appreciate it's mid adjustment on the dropout, I would have expected more clearance in this position.
They put the same 2.6's on the Unit, which possibly limits your ratio options whilst having clearance in SS mode.
Just as well they've steepened the seat tube angle.

True. I, despite riding ssp daily, have not thought about that, despite just half a week ago changing a 15 t to 18 t cog and needing to give the chain a few more links and needed to slide the wheel.
A steeper seat tube will help with clearance - I don't see your point. Would be happy to learn about your reasoning.
Also, I find steeper seat tubes to improve a bike's feel, ergonomics etc.

The only off the shelf bike I've seen so far that could replace my longitude. I'll be keeping and eye on that especially if rohloff dropouts will be available.
That 75degree seat angle looks to steep for me. I know some of those guys on Bikepacking.com love steep seat angles but I'm not so sure. I would like to try it... But I suspect the reason my Pugsley always seems so comfy when I get back on it is the 72 degree seat angle.
^ yes. Steep STA would be OK for up-down riding but 2-3 degrees more than I'm usually comfortable on might be a problem for me on longer flatter/seated miles (might - would have to ride this bike to be sure as one number is never 100% indicative of ride / fit). Steeper STAs tend to pitch my weight forward too much and hand pressure becomes a problem - though the front end height and TT/reach length is part of that too and may counteract it.
