A good watch

Post by summittoppler »

Just spent the last hour watching Pedalling Dreams: The Raleigh Story on BBC4.
A fantastic programme looking at the history of the brand.

So I suppose you can find it on catch up....

Thought you were going to draw attention to a nice bikepacker-specific timepiece there  . Wonder what extras it would have.... a "compass" needle pointing to the nearest Spar maybe...

A stopwatch for timing how long it takes your stove to boil a mug of water?

I've always quite fancied one of those laser watches like in the James Bond film "Goldeneye". Like James I'd probably use it to escape from a former Soviet missile train that had been set to explode, should I ever find myself locked in one.

Maybe you could boil your water with the laser?

But then what would I use to time how long it took to boil?

I find the sun a perfectly adequate indicator of time when out bikepacking. Weighs less than 007’s Rolex too, well actually it weighs significantly more now I think about it.

Well I thought it was a great programme that was worthy of a view not a watch

Jeff... I have a Casio Protrek which is amazing. 3rd one over past 15 years and much better than a Suunto. Probably cos mine have always been solar powered things...

My road watch is a Casio solar powered thing too but its an Edifice which I also managed to acquire pretty cheap.

I'd just check your budget and get the best one money can allow...

Jusr messing Jeff... I actually managed to find it on youtube yesterday (not sure how long it'll stay on).

The elderly lady from Huddersfield (where I'm born and bred) was interesting. 100 miles with her dad to a place called Rille with a 3 speed Sturmey Archer gearing!... Then another 100 miles back the next day.

Does anyone know what she meant by Rille as I fancy to try and recreate that route and riding it with a Bivy at Rille (wherever that is!?)..

My road watch
What? You have a specific watch for cycling on tarmac or is road watch like neighbourhood watch?

Lol... Stu. Basicaly what happened was that my Casio Protrek Solar broke down and I couldn't afford another. So went and got myself an Edifice Solar for super cheap on their website of oldstock. It's an all metal affair and the bracelet doesn't fully open up so wasn't good for work where I would normally wear the watch in my belt loops (infection prevention so 'bear* below the elbow').

Also realised the metal strap even with the tightest setting of many links removed would whack about on the bone on my wrist (I forget what its called) so was enough reason to invest in a cheapy plastice thingy...

Then fortunately a Protrek Casio (basically portrek= rugged with compass/barometer/big dial etc for outdoorsy use) came up on fleabay for a few quid with a chewed up strap. So got that and upgraded the strap to one of them (apparently) army type straps: ZuluDiver...

So now, one needs to ensure their both being used and since the metal one hurts on offroad with the rigids... Its Edifice for smooth roads and the Protrek for the rigid mtb stuff...

Thats a Good Watch story right
