The "safety" devices like phone, avalanche beacon, GPS Messenger, PLB aren't just for "us" as this case shows...

also a good reason for two way commuication
could have let partner know was okay and assisting another
similarly could have let the emergency services know the nature of the problem

Yes, it's one of my (very)slight concerns about pressing the SOS button on my SPOT if I came across someone in a similar situation. There'd be an hour or two of panic outside the bubble. Giving the emergency services a heads up is very much a positive. Note that I wouldn't hesitate to press the button, I've an emergency notification/locator device, there's an emergency so ...

A counter argument is that this story made the news precisely because it's so rare a situation and thus a novelty to the news channels.

I think the guy was very lucky, he could have collapsed a few metres from the track and would never have been seen in that brush. When I worked in the desert (Oman) it was continually stressed on us that if your vehicle got stuck/broke down you stayed with it - far easier to spot a truck in an air search than you waving your arms around.
