Prescription Glasses

I'm now on my 3rd set of Oakley prescription glasses. I love them to death ...but.. ultimately the lenses get scratched and I have to buy a new set every few years.

I cannot be doing with inserts tried those before and contact lenses just fall out. So any other options before I spaff a stupid amount on a new set of Oakleys. I care about quality and have tried Optilabs find them really poor.

Can't help much Dave. I'm on my 3rd set of Oakley lenses (lost one pair, then changed prescription a few years ago) - but that's in about 12 years of use.

I know you've discounted inserts but have you looked at Julbo? I've had a pair of Zebra photochromic for 18 months, they have a prescription insert that is bifocal and was done at Specsavers (they have 4 shops on the Costa Blanca) at a fraction of the local optician prices. Beauty is you just change the lens in the insert when your prescription changes. The whole thing is very light and optics imo are better than Oakley, they don't steam up either. Photochromic works fast and doesn't rub off like other coated lenses. I hate having to wear glasses but these are the best I've had.

I wear these glasses on the beach Duncan. Not sure inserts would go as well with my tanned muscular frame and budgie smugglers

Honestly, when it's sunny, it's virtually impossible to see the inserts as their frames are transparent. Here's a pic taken 5 mins ago, sorry for the insanely handsome model.

I guess I've also made the assumption that you're on the beach when it's sunny.

As a fellow myopic old git I think you should really let go any aspersions of being ‘cool’. While there once was a time where a set of Oakey’s might have added a little to my sophisticated sporting persona the addition of powerful bifocal lenses really gives the game away. That and a can’t afford them But I know where you are coming from, my solution is a pair of quicksilver frames with photochromic lenses, horrifically expensive (£400) but I only have to take one pair on trips, obviously once going a fair lick I can’t see Anything due to the wind but to be honest at my age it happens rarely
Dave, I’m afraid You’re going to get bent over unless you adopt reg’s strategy of TWO pairs of glasses at once, however you might go hungry

I'm in the same boat Dave, currently on year four with the scratches now approaching dangerous levels.

I hate sunglasses in general and so stick with what I know (the Oakley's fit well and last longer than most other offerings).

But cheap they are not!

Be interested to hear if any other workable option comes up.....

I have been thinking of getting prescription glasses for a while but a few things have put me off. 1. the sweating and fugging up that 2.I'd need another set of glasses when I get to work.3. The cost

I am a sweaty guy. On the #jennride I had to take my sunnies off to reduce the sweating.

On contacts falling out. I use soft lenses, currently accuve oasys. Have been using soft lenses for 20+ years and have never had a lens fall out.

The issue with lenses for me is bikepacking and changing your lenses with hands covered in cow slurry and grease.

Been looking at the addidas prescription glasses. Anyone tried them.

If you can get away from labels there is a look alike frame in VE for £39.
Then get cheapest plastic lenses. I used to have driving type prescription lenses
but now cant read a gps unless I have varifocals.
They still scratch but at least its cheaper at about half the price of Oakley.
The cheapest solution of all is a longer peak on your helmet.

Choose carefully and you can get a pair pretty cheap. Relatively speaking.
