Custom Frame Bag

Post by ZeroDarkBivi »

Who is the go-to supplier of quality custom frame bags now that Wildcat are no longer?

Just got a new FS bike with a very unusual small space that nothing off-the-shelf will fit.

This is what I've decided on when my Wildcat gives up. The Stingray is made in the Peaks, has 2 pockets/openings on one side and one map pocket on other as standard. Theyre willing to work with you pn strapping options and everyone thats had pne has always spoken highly of it (AFAIK)... Only £70ish quid which in my books is a proper steal if its anywhwre as good as any of their other bags (namely the drybags I have which are still gping nicely 6 years on)...

One thing I dont like on alpkit bags though is the webbing ladder which seems to not look very nice after some use. I'd be gping for integrated straps...

I had a stingray made for my trip last year. It was well made and did a good job.

I no longer have it though, it was too big. How? I hear you say - it's custom made to your template.

Well yes it is. I made my template the exact size so it fit the top half of my frame and nicely cleared my bottles which were lowered on shimano di2 battery bracket things. The bag came the exact size of my template - all well and good so far

But.... when you factor in the webbing strapping things and the fact that it's 6cm wide, when it was full of the heavy stuff you use frame bags for it ended up hanging down much further than intended, it draped on my bottles, got in the way and annoyed me the entire trip.

Soon as i got home I moved it on and replaced it with a mac workshop bag.

Again, it was nice kit but be careful with the sizing

I had the same issue with my Alpkit Stingray. I measured it out exactly to fit the frame, but it was definitely a bit slack when fitted. I'm sure Alpkit followed the template precisely, but I should have ordered it a a couple of centimetres shorter so it stretched to fill the space.

That said, it's a well made bag and exceptional value for custom-made kit. And luckily I bought another bike the following year that happened to have a slightly bigger frame triangle and it now fits perfectly :-bd

There's also Restrap if you want UK made.

Only thing I dont like about the Alpkit stingray is they default fit the main compartment opening on the left. I always lay my bike down on the left so the derailleur isnt on the ground, so have to pick the bike up to access it. If was getting another would insist on RH main compartment zip.

I’ve had bags made by Alpkit and Alpamayo - the Alpamayo one was much better quality.

Anyone had a bag made by Straightcut? Another UK firm/startup but not one I've had experience with.

I've an Alpkit custom frame bag for the Spearfish (came with the frame when I bought it off IanPV) but it didn't have space for a water bottle so I haven't really used it.

Bob, although not had a bag made I did investigate them whilst needing a full bag for my Stan... however their pricing structure put me off as the price for the equivalent of a Restrap (around £95 for 1 map pocket and one standard pocket as the main compartment) was coming in at over £150...

For me this was a bit much outlay but luckily I ended up getting lucky with a well used full frame Wildcat...

Not knocking Straighcut mind and I'm sure they've (as mentioned a couple times on the forum in various places) got quality workmanship... But at over £50 more than AK and Restrap I couldn't afford personally...

Custom made bag from bike-bag.co.uk for my On-One Fatty Trail. Made from a template, fits well though not used in anger yet. Probably not completely waterproof at stitching, logo stitching goes through. £51.00 + £9.50 for map pocket +£5.95 postage

I thought it worth updating this. Just had a delivery of a custom frame bag from Straightcut.

I'll start by saying I have other gear from Wildcat, revelate and Alpkit.

Really pleased with what I have received from Ross at straightcut. Materials and workmanship look spot on. Easily on par with Wildcat and revelate (I don't rate the Alpkit one quite as highly, its a possum and there's nothing wrong with it at all).

I haven't used it yet apart from the garden test, but it fits really nicely and is made from a photo with a ruler in it not a cardboard template. Ross has clearly made this work very well.
Communication through the inquiry and buying process

Not the cheapest in the market, but neither were Wildcat and we all trusted them.

Heres a pic

My friend makes Triglav bags: https://www.instagram.com/triglavbikepacking/
If you are not in hurry, can heartily recommend it. Great quality and attention to details.

Although, the owner being my friend, take my recommendation with appropriate dose of skepticism.
